摘要: This invention relates to organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and to methods for their manufacture. The invention provides an OLED element or display which enables contrast to be produced in an image. In accordance with the invention a layer of ink is patterned as a blocking layer between two OLED layers. The ink reduces or prevents conduction, i.e. movement of charge, between the two OLED layers in that area of the device. The ink may be dark in color, e.g. black, to increase the contrast ratio of the OLED. The blocking layer is provided between any two layers in the OLED and blocks the charge movement in these areas. The blocking layer may comprise a multiplicity of ink dots, the density of which determines the extent to which conduction is hindered. The blocking layer may be produced as a “grey-scale” pattern wherein the density of dots is varied across the pattern.

摘要: A method for forming an organic electronic device, which method comprises the steps of: a) forming a negative image of a desired pattern on a substrate or device layer with a lift-off ink; b) coating a first device layer to be patterned on top of the negative image; c) coating one or more further device layers to be patterned on top of the first device layer to be patterned; and d) removing the lift-off ink and unwanted portions of the device layers above it, thereby leaving the desired pattern of device layers. The method allows the formation of a device structure wherein the device layers to be patterned are self-aligned. The method enables a multiplicity of layers to be patterned in a single set of printing and lift-off steps using one pattern which ensures the excellent vertical alignment of edges, which would be difficult to achieve by direct printing. Horizontal alignment can also be achieved. The size of the device features can be reduced below the actual printing resolution. Examples of organic electronic devices include OFETs, OLEDs, memory, sensing elements, solar cells, photo-sensors, photoreceptors for electrophotography and the like.

摘要: A process for preparing a patterned, cross-linked, acrylic-polymer, film coating on a substrate; the process comprising the steps of: a) applying to the substrate by an ink-jet printing process a mixture comprising: i) one or more cross-linkable, thermally ink-jettable, water-dissipatable, precursor(s) for one or more cross-linked acrylic-polymer(s); ii) one or more cross-linker(s) capable of cross-linking the precursor(s) for the acrylic-polymer(s); and iii) one or more colorant(s); and b) thereafter curing the mixture in situ to form the patterned, cross-linked, acrylic-polymer, film coating on the substrate. Preferably the substrate is a color filter suitable for use in an LCD display and the mixture is applied in a single pass. The precursor may itself comprise polymers, e.g. acrylic polymers. Ink for use in this process and substrates printed by this process are also described.

摘要: A polymeric material comprising at least first and second polymer parts, which first part has a number average molecular weight higher than that of the second part and which first and second polymer parts each comprise a respective polymer part derived from at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, is prepared by a process which comprises the steps of (1) preparing, by aqueous suspension polymerisation the first, higher molecular weight polymer part in the presence of a free radical initiator, but in the absence of a chain transfer agent to form a suspension of the first, higher molecular weight part and thereafter (2) preparing by aqueous suspension polymerisation the second, lower molecular weight part, which preparation step (2) is carried out in the presence of the suspension of the first, higher molecular weight part, a free radical initiator and a catalytic chain transfer agent (CCTA). Step (2) may be continued to provide, additionally, a third polymer of a molecular weight intermediate that of the first and second polymers. A polymeric material thus obtainable has a PDi of at least 5 and a skewed molecular weight distribution in which the first-third polymers are present in successively increasing amounts. The polymeric material is especially suitable for use as a binder in a toner composition.
