The copolymer includes a mixture of alcohols having side chains with an average number of carbons ranging from greater than 8 to less than 12 defined by the following formula: C n = ∑ i = j i = z  X i  Cn i ∑ i = j i = z  X i where Xi is the mole fraction of alcohol (i); Cni represents the number of carbon atoms in alcohol (i); j is the lowest number of carbons in an alcohol in the copolymer and must be at least 6; and z is the highest number of carbons in an alcohol.

The lubricant composition is made up of (a) an API Group III base stock; (b) one or more semi-crystalline viscosity modifier; and (c) one or more LOFIs having a side-chain distribution which satisfies the following requirements: (1) the distribution contains side chains ranging from C8 to C18 with an average carbon number ranging from 12.4 to 14.4; (2) the side chain distribution is bi-modal with a lower portion of the bi-modal distribution made up primarily of C12 and an upper portion of the distribution made up primarily of C16, C18 or combinations thereof; (3) the total mole % of the upper portion of the distribution must be less than that of the lower portion of the distribution; and (4) the amount of C12 on the side chain must be at least 40 mole % of the total side chain distribution.

摘要： Compositions for improving at least the low temperature flow properties of high viscosity index, high saturates, low sulfur lubricating oils (also known as American Petroleum Institute Group II and Group III oils). The compositions comprise a mixture of lubricating oil flow improvers (LOFIs) that are specified first and second component copolymers of unsaturated dicarboxy esters, including a first component which is a polymer or copolymer of a carboxylate containing pendent ester groups wherein the average side chain carbon number is between 11.0 and 12.4, such as dialkyl fumarate/vinyl acetate copolymer, and a second component which also is a polymer or copolymer such as dialkyl fumarate/vinyl acetate copolymer, but wherein the average side chain carbon number is between 12.7 and 15.0. Alternatively, each of the polymers or copolymers can be esterified styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer, or esterified olefin/maleic anhydride copolymer provided that each of the two components has the specified, different average side chain carbon numbers.
