First and second projectors 30a,30b of the foreign matter detecting apparatus apply a plurality of light beams with different convergence diameters to the plastic resin which is extruded and moves in a passage 18. First and second light receivers 40a,40b receive the light beams transmitted through the plastic resin, and compare their respective reception levels with a plurality of levels of light reception which are previously set corresponding to the size of the foreign matter. Based on the result of comparison, the light receivers detect the presence and size of the foreign matter involved in the plastic resin.

A reference connector to be a reference in inspection and a sample connector to be inspected are positioned at predetermined positions, the inspection light irradiated from each of the fiber insertion holes is irradiated to a position detection sensor through an optical system, the position of the inspection light is detected on the light receiving surface of the position detection sensor, and then, an amount of axis dislocation of each of the fiber insertion holes of the sample connector corresponding to each of the fiber insertion holes of the reference connector is inspected based on the detected position of each of the fiber insertion holes.

A holding member has a plurality of apertures each formed in a position respectively corresponding to a position of one of the plurality of apertures of the fixing disk, and the holding member releasably holds the fixing disk and is adapted to carry the fixing disk for axial movement thereof in a Z-axis direction. A Z stage for moving the holding member in the Z-axis direction is provided for fitting the respective contact surfaces of the first and second optical components to each other, and laser emitting heads emit a laser beam through corresponding apertures of the fixing disk and holding member to weld the first and second optical components together at the respective fitted contact surfaces thereof, with the optical axes of the first and second optical components in alignment with each other.

Next, the calculated relationship between the frequency and intensity is compared with a preset standard data. When the intensity exceeds 0.6 at a predetermined range of frequency domain, a judgment of rejection is made; when no data exceeding 0.6 exists in said judgment domain, a judgment of acceptance is made.
