Abstract: A method and system for diagnosing battery system problems in a vehicle, where the method distinguishes between problems of various battery system components. More particularly, battery connection problems such as loose connections, corroded battery terminals, etc., may be distinguished from battery system problems as a whole. Load related readings that generally reflect the performance of the battery system during a cranking event and one or more non-load related readings may be gathered and used to determine whether there is a battery system problem and whether there is a battery specific problem. If load related readings and/or non-load related readings fail to indicate a battery specific problem, a battery connection problem may be diagnosed.

Abstract: A vehicle including a cooling fan that is rotatably coupled to an electric motor that is electrically powered by a DC power source via an inverter is described. A method for controlling the cooling fan includes monitoring, via a first controller, a vehicle speed, and selecting a preferred operating state for the electric motor based upon the vehicle speed. The preferred operating state includes one of a first command associated with controlling the cooling fan to force air through the cooling system, a second command associated with a fan brake request, and a third command associated with an energy recovery mode. A discrete message from the first controller is communicated to an inverter controller, wherein the discrete message is based upon the preferred operating state for the electric motor. The inverter controller controls the inverter to control the electric motor in response to the discrete message.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for controlling a vehicle capable of operating in a fuel economy mode in which fuel is conserved by limiting operation of an engine. The method includes obtaining forecast temperatures for one or more dates and comparing the forecast temperature for each date to a threshold temperature. The method further includes generating a control signal if the forecast temperature for a given date meets a predetermined condition relative to the threshold temperature. The control signal is configured to disable fuel economy mode of the vehicle. The method further includes disabling the fuel economy mode of the vehicle in response to receiving the control signal. By disabling fuel economy mode at selected temperatures, the method and system allow the vehicle to preserve a sufficient state of charge in the vehicle battery for cold starts.

Abstract: A method and system for downloading and installing software to a vehicle that includes a battery and vehicle electronics. The system includes a vehicle communications device that receives an anticipatory signal indicating that software is ready or will be ready for wireless download to the vehicle. In response to the anticipatory signal, the method and system determine whether the vehicle is in a state and/or the battery has enough energy for wireless download of the software package, installation of the software, or both. If the vehicle is not in such a state or the battery does not have the requisite energy, then changes to battery charging parameters may be made in preparation of the software download and/or installation.
