Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which A denotes C-R.sup.4 or N; X denotes alkyl and Y denotes alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, phenyl or benzoyl, or, together with X, cycloalkyl; R.sup.1 -R.sup.4 denote H, alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, halogen, NO.sub.2, CN, phenoxy or (substituted) phenyl; R.sup.5 denotes H or alkyl; and R.sup.6 denotes H, (substituted) alkyl, halogenoalkenyl, cycloalk(en)yl, alkynyl, (substituted) phenyl or carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide, sulfo-ester or acyl radicals, are effective plant treatment agents, in particular herbicides.

A process for increasing the carbohydrate accumulation in plants by application of compounds of the class of phenoxyphenoxy-, pyridyloxy-, benzoxazolyloxy-, benzothiazolyloxy-, quinolinyloxy-, quinazolinyloxy-phenoxypropionic acid derivatives or cyclohexanedione derivatives.

Optically active enantiomers of the formula I ##STR1## where R is a group of the formulae ##STR2## R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, among others, are halogen or CF.sub.3 and Z is a carboxyl, carboxylate, carboxylic acid ester, thioester, carbonamide, carboxylic acid anilide, carbohydrazide or thioamide group, are interesting herbicides the effect of which is considerably superior to that of the optically inactive racemates.
