    摘要: A failure detection system detects a failure occurring in an exhaust secondary air supply system of an internal combustion engine, and has a catalytic converter installed in an exhaust pipe of an exhaust system of the engine for reducing pollutants from exhaust gases emitted from the engine, a conduit connected, at one end, to the exhaust pipe at a location upstream of the catalytic converter and an air pump connected to an opposite end of the conduit for supplying compressed air in the conduit. The conduit is closed by the a valve which opens in response to the negative pressure and a second valve which opens in response to the conduit pressure. In the system a first prescribed level and the second prescribed level are set and two pressure switches are provided for generating output at the levels. A failure occurring in the air pump and the valve is detected based on operation of the air pump and the output of the pressure detectors. Alternatively, the failure is detected by changing the timing of the termination of the air pump and closing of the second valve while using one switch and the second prescribed level. The system is simple in configuration.

    摘要: A system and method for detecting a failure occurring in an exhaust secondary air supply system of an internal combustion engine. A conduit is connected to the exhaust pipe to supply secondary air to the exhaust pipe to promote oxidization of the emissions in the exhaust gases. A valve is provided in the conduit for opening/closing it. The failure of the valve is detected by operating the air pump to supply the air in the conduit, while closing the conduit by the valve. The air/fuel ratio is detected by an oxygen sensor installed downstream of the conduit to be compared with a desired air/fuel ratio. If the detected air/fuel ratio is leaner than a desired air/fuel ratio, the air flows to the exhaust pipe so that the valve is considered to be stuck to open. Alternatively, a pump current is detected and is compared with a reference value indicative of the current at no air flow. If the detected current is less than the reference value, the valve is considered to be in failure. Moreover, the movement of a valve member is sensed to detect whether the valve is stuck to close.

    摘要: A control system controls an electrically heated catalyst for purifying exhaust gases emitted from an internal combustion engine. Voltage applied to the electrically heated catalyst and electric current flowing through the same are detected. A changeover is made between supply and interrupt of power to the electrically heated catalyst. A parameter indicative of an operative state of the electrically heated catalyst is calculated based on the detected voltage and the detected current, and the operative state of the electrically heated catalyst is detected based on the parameter. The changeover between the supply and interrupt of power to the electrically heated catalyst is controlled based the operative state of the electrically heated catalyst thus detected.

    摘要: In a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine including a plurality of fuel injection valves corresponding to a plurality of cylinders, respectively, and a catalytic converter provided in an exhaust system common to the cylinders, the concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas from the engine is precisely controlled in accordance with the operational condition of the engine in a low-temperature state of the engine for the prompt activation of the catalyst. When the engine is at a low temperature, the operation of the fuel injection valves is controlled so as to stop the supplying of a fuel into the particular cylinders and, the operation of a valve operating characteristic changing means is controlled to adjust the amounts of air drawn and discharged on the basis of conditions detected by operational condition detecting means and at such low temperature to thereby control the oxygen supplied to the catalyst in the catalytic converter whereby the activity of the catalyst can be controlled.
