Abstract: A method of operating an engine includes operating the engine in first and second engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a first stoichiometric fuel mixture and a first volume of residual gas. The engine is operated in a third engine operating map region by performing turbulent jet controlled compression ignition (TJCCI) with an ultra lean fuel mixture and a first volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, a fourth engine operating map region by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a third stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of cooled exhaust gas recirculation, and a fifth engine operating map region, characterized by shutting off the engine. The engine is operated in a mode transition region between the second, third, and fourth engine operating map regions by performing passive jet ignition combustion with a second stoichiometric fuel mixture and a second volume of residual gas.

Abstract: The solution of the invention is an internal combustion engine with oxygen concentrating equipment (80) wherein the air taken in the cylinder space (15) during the intake stroke and pushed out by the piston (5) during the charging stroke charges one or more cells (41A-41Z, 51A-51Z) of the oxygen concentrating equipment (80) and after separating most of the nitrogen in the cells (41A-41Z, 51A-51Z), the oxygen rich air is injected into the cylinder space (15) through a compressor (33) at the beginning of the expansion stroke by an injector (11). The fuel is also introduced into the cylinder space (15) at the beginning of the expansion stroke by a fuel injector (19). The ignition may be spark ignition, self-ignition or their combination.

Abstract: A determination device for an internal combustion engine executes a partial fuel cut-off process. The determination device determines that exhaust gas characteristics have deteriorated when the misfire rate of the internal combustion engine is greater than or equal to a determination threshold. Abstract: A rich control for temporarily declining an air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas discharged from an engine combustion chamber is performed by an additional fuel being injected into a cylinder in an expansion stroke or an exhaust stroke in a state where a throttle opening degree is switched from a base throttle opening degree to a throttle opening degree for the rich control and an EGR rate is switched from a base EGR rate to an EGR rate for the rich control. The rich control is initiated by switching a low pressure side EGR control valve opening degree (VEGRL) to a low pressure side EGR control valve opening degree for the rich control (VEGRLR), then switching a high pressure side EGR control valve opening degree (VEGRH) to a high pressure side EGR control valve opening degree for the rich control (VEGRHR), then controlling the throttle opening degree (VTH), and then initiating the injection of the additional fuel (Qa).
