Resinous composition for use in coating comprising a hexahydrophthalic acid or anhydride thereof whose acidic groups are capable of developing a resinous acid value and etherified aminoformaldehyde resin. This resinous composition is characterized by possessing all the advantages of oil-free polyester resin compositions such as good weather resistance mechanical properties in the coating, interlaminar adhesion and the like, and furthermore the composition inter alia, has excellent weather resistance because of its modification with saturated alicyclic acids and the curing properties are enhanced because of the control of the acidic groups which develops a resinous acid value. The invention also provides a coating composition, containing as a vehicle, the aforementioned resinous composition.

A resinous composition for coating use comprising a resin obtained by the reaction of base resin having as essential groups, both carboxyl groups derived from a polycarboxylic acid whose titration midpoint potential in non-aqueous potentiometric titration is more than -300 mV in a state capable of developing a resinous acid value and a functional group reactive with a crosslinking agent, and an alkyleneimine compound in an amount equivalent to resinous acid value of 0.01 to 50, the resinous acid value based on said polycarboxylic acid in the final composition being 2 to 50.This is useful for the preparation of a coating composition having improved curing property, storage stability and time color stability.

A resinous composition for coating use comprising an amphoteric resin having an acidic resinous component and a basic component of a basic compound, and an amino-formaldehyde resin etherified with monohydric alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and/or isocyanate compound, which is characterized by the fact that the basic component of a said amphoteric resin consists of a basic compound whose titration midpoint potential in non-aqueous potentiometric titration, when incorporated into the resin, is less than 450 mV, and the basicity of the amphoteric resin is within the range of 1.0.times.10.sup.-2 to 1.0 m mol/g solid. This composition can exhibit excellent pigment dispersibility and is useful as resinous vehicle for a coating composition to be used as a top coat for automobile bodies and the like.

A novel resinous composition used for coating comprising an amphoteric polyester resin whose acidic groups are capable of developing a resinous acid value are controlled in kind and are modified with saturated alicyclic acids and etherified amino-formaldehyde resins. This resinous composition is characterized by having all of the advantages possessed by oil-free polyester resin compositions in respect to weather resistance, the mechanical properties of the coating, interlaminar adhesion and the like, and furthermore, are excellent, inter alia, weather resistance because of be modified with saturated alicyclic acids. Also the curing properties are improved because of the control of the acidic groups and because the resins are amphoteric, they are compatible with melamine resins and have excellent pigment dispersibility. The invention also provides a coating composition containing as a vehicle, the abovementioned resinous composition.

A resinous composition for coating use which is excellent in weather resistance and in low temperature curing properties, comprising a resin having resinous acid value based on carboxyl groups derived from its constituting tetrachlorophthalic acid of 2 to 8, a resinous acid value based on sulfonic acid groups derived from its constituting sulfophthalic acid of 0.5 to 5, and a functional group capable of reacting with a crosslinking agent to be compounded with the resin. The present resin is useful, in the combination form with a crosslinking agent, as a resinous vehicle of a coating composition which is excellent in curing properties, weather resistance, pigment dispersibility and storage stability and is specifically useful as an intermediate or top coat paint for automobile bodies or the like.
