A method and an arrangement for controlling a drive unit of a vehicle are suggested. In this method, the control functions for the power of the drive unit and the monitoring of these control functions are carried out by a single microcomputer. A monitoring module, which is separate from the microcomputer, is provided for checking the monitoring functions. The monitoring module transmits test signals to the microcomputer at a given time. The microcomputer then computes the monitoring function on the basis of test data. The result of the computation is transmitted to the monitoring module which checks the operability of the monitoring function in the microcomputer by making a comparison to stored values.

The invention is directed to a method and an arrangement for controlling an operating variable of a motor vehicle. A friction-burdened actuator assembly, which influences the operating variable, is actuated via a drive signal. This drive signal is formed on the basis of a desired value of the operating variable. The drive signal is additionally changed in response to a desired change of the operating variable to transfer the actuator assembly out of a steady state condition preferably so as to effect an actual change of the operating variable. In this way, the static friction of the actuator assembly, which is in opposition to the change of the operating variable, is overcome. Furthermore, the drive signal can be additionally changed in the sense of a reduction of the change of the operating variable when the operating variable approaches the desired value thereof.

A procedure to diagnose a fuel tank ventilation system of a motor vehicle and a device to implement the procedure are proposed. The fuel tank ventilation system contains at least one first ventilation pathway discharging into the air intake area of the internal combustion engine downstream behind a supercharger as well as at least one second ventilation pathway discharging into the air intake area upstream in front of the supercharger. Provision is made for a diagnosis with at least two partial diagnoses, whereby the first partial diagnosis pertaining to the first ventilation pathway is implemented, if the intake manifold pressure in the discharge area of the first ventilation pathway is smaller than the fuel tank system pressure; and the second partial diagnosis pertaining to the second ventilation pathway is implemented, if the intake manifold pressure in the discharge area of the first ventilation pathway is greater than the fuel tank system pressure. An error signal is provided, if at least one of the partial diagnoses generates a partial error signal.

In the method, the engine is operated with increased manifold pressure during the warm-up phase after a cold start. In the method, an actuation of the brake effects limiting the manifold pressure to a maximum value by intervening in the engine control. This maximum value is less than the value which would otherwise adjust under the same conditions without brake actuation.

A maximum permissible position of the power-output element is determined on the basis of the position of the operator-controlled element as well as on the basis of data with respect to the operating range for function monitoring the setting of the power-output element and a fault is then detected when the actual position of the power-output element exceeds the maximum permissible value.
