In order to ensure that the internal combustion engine (1) is supplied with fuel at any operating point of the internal combustion engine (1), it is provided that at least two of the fuel pumps (6, 8; 11) of the fuel supply system (2) take the form of electric fuel pumps (6, 8). The second electric fuel pump (8) in the direction of flow is preferably adjusted to a separate, variable pressure level in a demand-responsive manner, so that the pressure and fuel quantity are controlled.

The fuel injection system includes metering valves actuatable by means of an air flow measuring device, at which valves a pressure difference can be held constant via control valves and the pressure difference is variable in accordance with operational characteristics of the engine. To this end, the control valves are located on a control pressure line in which a control throttle and an electromagnetic valve are disposed. At the same time, pressure limitation elements communicate with the control pressure line and, in the event of acceleration of the engine, reduce the extent of increase of control pressure and thus assure fuel metering corresponding with the operational state of the engine.

Known tank flanges have a main filter which has a filter housing with an inlet and an outlet, and a first connecting duct for connecting the main filter to a feed unit. The filter housing is integrated in the tank flange, and filter fabric is inserted into the filter housing and the filter housing is closed off by a filter cover. The inlet of the filter housing is connected to the pressure side of a feed unit and the outlet leads to an internal combustion engine. A disadvantage is that, in order to exchange the filter fabric, the large-area filter cover must be opened, as a result of which a large amount of fuel vapor is dissipated to the atmosphere. In the case of the tank flange according to the invention, the exchangeability of the main filter is simplified by virtue of the main filter being embodied as a filter cartridge. It is provided according to the invention that the inlet of the main filter extends into the first connecting duct of the tank flange and therein forms a sealed connection.
