Chemically aided milling of ceramic powders is disclosed. Carrier suspension, usually aqueous, of the ceramic powder may have added to it a dispersing agent and a passivating agent, followed by milling the aqueous suspension while continuously monitoring the pH, and as necessary, adding acid or a base to keep the pH within a desired range during milling. Real time monitoring allows milling with lower energy consumption, and enhances the desirable particle surfaces of the ceramic powder. The passivating agent can also be real time monitored and adjusted as necessary.

The disclosed invention relates to a method of manufacture of transparent ceramics such as yttrium aluminum garnet by tape casting. The method entails forming a mixture of ceramic oxide, dispersant and organic solvent, milling the mixture to produce a first slurry, mixing the first slurry with an organic binder and a plasticizer to form a treated slurry, milling the treated slurry to produce milled slurry, tape casting the milled slurry to produce cast tape, drying the cast tape to produce dried tape, stacking portions of dried tape to form an assembly, compressing the assembly to produce a preform, heating the preform to produce a green preform, and sintering the green preform to produce transparent yttrium aluminum garnet. The method may be used to produce a unitary ceramic product having differing transparent sections as well as transparent ceramic product having a dopant gradient across a portion of the thickness of the product.

The disclosed invention relates to PMN compounds, powders and products thereof, especially to PMN-PT compounds, powders and products which have the perovskite structure. The PMN-PT compounds are characterized by the formula (1−x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3−xPbTiO3 where x is about 0.0 to about 0.95, preferably x is about 0.0 to about 0.40. The compounds are made by sintering a precursor powder of the compound. PMN-PT products produced from the precursor powders have much greater densities than products produced from PMN-PT starting powder. The invention also relates to textured PMN-PT produced from the precursor powders.

The disclosed invention relates to unsupported, anisotropically shaped, cubic SrTiO3 single crystal particles and their method of manufacture. The particles have a rectangular face and measure about 10-40 micron in edge length, and about 2-5 micron in thickness. The anisotropically shaped, cubic SrTiO3 single crystal particles are made by reacting tabular Sr3Ti2O7 with TiO2 in the presence of a molten alkali salt.

The process incorporating the invention enables fabrication of dense, highly textured (fraction of oriented grains >20 vol. %) alumina. The method uses a mixture of aluminum metal powder, alumina powder, tabular alumina grains and a liquid phase former. A dry powder mixtures of these components is compacted by dry forming techniques such as roll compaction, uniaxial pressing, forging and/or double action pressing. The formed part is then heated at 0.5-10° C./min. to a temperature between 450 and 500° C. and is held for 2-15 h, and is then heated at 1-10° C/min. to 900-1070° C. and is held for 2-10 hours to convert the aluminum particles into alumina. The part is then heated to a higher temperature (>1400° C.) to form a liquid phase which assists densification and promotes the growth of the tabular alumina grains. The aspect ratio range of the textured alumina grains is from 2-14.

The base is comprised of a bio-compatible material and has first and second ends and side walls which include serrations having substantially planar surfaces facing in the direction of the second end. The depth of the serrations nearest said second end is greater than the depth of the serrations nearest the first end. The core is configured so as to permit cooperative engagement with at least one prosthetic crown.
