    摘要: A friction clutch coupling an engine and a gear transmission of a vehicle is controlled by a microprocessor based circuit using logic which defines operating modes according to engine and clutch conditions. During the time of clutch closure, when the vehicle is starting from rest in a startup or launch mode, the throttle or other engine control signal is restrained from quickly responding to the accelerator pedal. This avoids engine overspeeding which results from generating high torque before sufficient clutch capacity has been achieved. The control signal is developed as a function of the pedal position under control of throttle logic which, in turn, is dependent on clutch operating modes defined by the clutch logic. The clutch operating modes are four modes for automatic clutch operation comprising touch point approach mode which prohibits a throttle signal during initial clutch movement, creep mode or startup mode after touch point occurs, and lockup mode for completing clutch closing when low clutch slip is attained. A non-automatic mode is entered before the accelerator pedal is depressed or when engine stall conditions are detected.

    摘要: A method and system for estimating the segment length of a multi-segment vehicle such as a semi tractor trailer vehicle is disclosed. The estimate is generated when the vehicle executes a turning maneuver. The method comprises determining the turning radius of the vehicle, sensing the articulation angle between two vehicle segments, such as a tractor and a trailer, generating a length estimate, and controlling the vehicle based on the estimate. The method and system are particularly useful for vehicles with steerable trailer axles in which controlling the vehicle includes automatically steering the trailer so that the trailer wheels follow a path substantially the same as the tractor wheels thus eliminating off-tracking. Controlling the vehicle may include detecting a jackknife condition and operating the braking system.

    摘要: A large articulated vehicle, such as a tractor semi-trailer truck often has a number of braking locations each having a number of brake sites. To properly balance the work performed at the various brake sites in decelerating the vehicle, it is necessary to determine the relative brake factors of each site. The brake factors characterize the braking performance for a particular delivered braking pressure. A system and method for determining the relative brake factors for such a vehicle is provided. The vehicle is decelerated at a known rate while delivered braking pressure is measured and recorded for each braking location. A system of simultaneous equations is then solved to determine the relative brake factors. Once the brake factors have been determined during a sequence of controlled braking events, subsequent braking may be modified to achieve a work-balanced braking mode.

    摘要: A laser distance measuring apparatus in which source beams from two lasers are combined and focused on a target. One beam is continuous wave and one has periodic narrow pulse envelopes. After reflection the composite reflected beam is redivided in a diffraction grating and compared with two respective reference beams by means of two photodetectors. Doppler data are provided, as well as separate high resolution and low resolution range output data. Integration of the Doppler data in a computer, and combination of the three data signals there, enable an unusually complete and accurate record of the shape of the target even if the shape has many severe discontinuities, as in the case of a turbine rotor. An alternative embodiment provides for switching the pulse time of flight portion of the system to utilize various harmonics of the pulse envelope waveform. Known phase delays are switchably interposed in one channel so that relative phase readings between the reference and target pulses are performed at near-zero phase differences. Phase readings can be made accurately when the signals possess near-zero phase differences. Fixed errors can be measured and calibrated out of measurement data.

    摘要: A closed loop optical gauge directs a laser beam toward an object whose radial velocity, instantaneous position, and/or shape are to be measured, and utilizes the Doppler frequency shift of the reflected beam to make measurements. A reference sample of the original direct beam has its frequency shifted by an acoustooptical modulator. A closed loop system is created by sensing the difference in frequency between the reflected beam and the shifted reference beam. The amount of frequency modulation is then controlled so that the frequency of the shifted reference beam continuouly tracks that of the reflected beam, preferably with a fixed offset of frequency. The output can be integrated with respect to time to obtain position or shape information.Absolute distance to the object is measured by transmitting a train of pulses of light toward the object and receiving reflected light pulses back. The round trip time of the light pulses is ascertained by measuring the phase displacement of the envelope of the reflected signals relative to the envelope of the transmitted light signals, with the aid of a phase locked loop. The oscillator of the phase locked loop is locked to the envelope of a reference sample of the transmitted signal, and can operate selectively at the fundamental frequency or a higher harmonic frequency of that envelope. A selected harmonic from the oscillator can be compared as to phase with the corresponding harmonic of the reflected light pulses. With calibration, the system can measure flight time, and therefore distance to the object, with high resolving power at the higher harmonic frequencies.
