A process for the resolution of optical isomers of racemic lithium pantoate by selective crystallization from a solution in methanol, ethanol, or other polar solvents, or by electrostatic separation. The optical isomers can be readily converted to optically active pantolactones which are the starting material for the preparation of optically active pantothenic acid and its salt and pantothenyl alcohol. One of the two optical isomers of each of these compounds possesses vitamin activity. The unwanted or inactive optical isomer of lithium pantoate as such is thermally stable and can be racemized by heating in the presence of a basic reacting compound at a temperature between 120 and 180.degree. C to produce a racemic mixture which can then be subjected directly to resolution without conversion to some other derivative in accordance with the processes of the present invention to produce the desired or active optical isomer.

An exhaust gas purification system (method and device) for the treatment of diesel exhaust gases containing nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons is disclosed, which comprises the addition of ammonia or of a compound decomposable to ammonia into the exhaust gas stream and the subsequent leading of the exhaust gas stream over two successively arranged SCR catalysts with different properties and compositions. Both SCR catalysts are free of vanadium compounds and only the downstream SCR catalyst contains zeolite compounds. The exhaust gas purification system according to the invention is characterized by good “kick-off” behavior at low temperatures and a simultaneously high conversion performance over a wide temperature range.

According to this there is initially provision of a first, α-hederin-rich extract and subsequently provision of a second, hederacoside C-rich extract. The substrates can be coated in the form of strip and only subsequently brought into the required external shape. Coated substrates such as these are no longer susceptible to staining by food, cleaning agents or fingerprints and can also be rendered antibacterial. Objects coated in this manner are thus suitable for use in architecture, for interior fittings of buildings, in furniture-making as well as for ornamental applications, and in particular in households, in sanitary applications, in hospitals and in the food-processing and pharmaceutical industries.
