摘要: An apparatus for ink-jet printing on a recording medium is provided which includes the steps of jetting aqueous ink drops on paper in the form of an image. The aqueous ink used is a slow-drying (high-surface tension) ink which does not penetrate the paper/paper fibers for a relatively long time. Prior to penetration of the paper/paper fibers, the water in the droplet is quickly evaporated from the ink while still resident on the paper surface. The evaporation process is substantially completed prior to an additional liquid ink being jetted onto the same or adjoining location of the recording medium. The evaporation is rapid enough to prevent the resident ink from substantially migrating/wicking to any adjacent location or into the recording medium. Further the drying energy is transferred to the resident ink spots from the same direction as the printheads ensuring less energy requirement.

摘要: Apparatus and methods for ultrasonic coupling using ultrasonic radiation pressure generating are provided. Ultrasonic energy is generated to propagate in the form of ultrasonic waves in a medium coupled to a second element. The ultrasonic energy is converged in the medium to couple the medium to an object located at a distance from the second element. Additional apparatus and methods are disclosed.

摘要: The present invention provides a method and device for the acoustic ejection of fluid droplets having a constant drop size from fluid-containing reservoirs having varying fluid heights contained therein without the need for repositioning the acoustic ejector in the z direction by adjusting the RF frequency and amplitude. In one embodiment, the device is comprised of: a plurality of reservoirs each adapted to contain a fluid; an ejector comprising a means for generating acoustic radiation, means for controlling the RF frequency and amplitude used to generate the acoustic radiation, means for focusing the acoustic radiation at a focal point near the fluid surface in each of the reservoirs; and a means for positioning the ejector in acoustically coupled relationship to each of the reservoirs. The invention is useful in a number of contexts, particularly in the preparation of biomolecular arrays.

摘要: This disclosure relates to semiconductor varactors, such as thin film poly-Si varactors, which have larger effective gate areas in accumulation than in depletion, together with capacitive switching ratios which are essentially determined by the ratio of their effective gate area in accumulation to their effective gate area in depletion. To that end, such a varactor has a fully depletable active semiconductor layer, such as a thin poly-Si film, and is constructed so that at least a part of its active layer is sandwiched between a relatively thin dielectric layer and a relatively thick dielectric layer. The thin dielectric layer, in turn, is sandwiched between the active semiconductor layer and a gate electrode. Furthermore, one or more ground electrodes are electrically coupled to laterally offset portions of the active semiconductor layer in partial overlapping alignment with the gate electrode. In keeping with this invention, the capacitance per unit surface area of the thin dielectric layer is so much greater than the capacitance per unit surface area of the thick dielectric layer that the series capacitance of the depleted active semiconductor layer and the thick dielectric layer negligibly contribute to the capacitance of the varactor when it is operating in its depletion mode. Top-gate and bottom-gate embodiments having ground electrodes which are coplanar with the active semiconductor layer, ground electrodes which are in a plane adjacent to the active semiconductor layer, segmented gate electrodes and segmented ground electrodes, and continuous gate electrodes and segmented ground electrodes are disclosed.
