Disclosed is an ungelled, modified chlorinated polyolefin resin suitable for providing a highly adherent, solvent resistant film on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate. The modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is prepared by grafting an unsaturated polycarboxylic acid and/or an unsaturated acid anhydride onto a chlorinated polyolefin resin to form an acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin. The resulting acid- and/or anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin resin is reacted with an organic monohydric alcohol to form an esterified product containing acid functionality. The resulting esterified product is reacted with a polyepoxide to form the ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin.Also disclosed is a method of preparing an ungelled modified chlorinated polyolefin resin of the invention, a coating composition containing a resin of the invention, and a method of forming a hardened film from the coating composition on a thermoplastic polyolefin substrate.

A method for preparing polymer microparticles which are stably dispersed in a nonaqueous medium involves:(a) mixing into a nonaqueous medium a polymerizable component at least 20 percent of which is insoluble in the nonaqueous medium, said polymerizable component comprising at least one polymerizable species;(b) subjecting the mixture of (a) to stress sufficient to particulate the mixture;(c) polymerizing the polymerizable component within each particle under conditions sufficient to produce polymer microparticles stably dispersed in the nonaqueous medium, said polymer microparticles being insoluble in the nonaqueous medium and the nonaqueous medium being substantially free of dissolved polymer, said polymer microparticles further characterized in that less than 20 percent of the polymer microparticles have a mean diameter greater than 5 microns.

Disclosed is a non-yellowing coating composition comprising: a hydroxy component having at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule, and an anhydride component having at least two carboxylic acid anhydride groups per molecule. The anhydride component is derived from a mixture of monomers comprising greater than or equal to 11 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride, the balance of the mixture comprised of at least one vinyl comonomer. The molar ratio of the vinyl comonomer to the carboxylic acid anhydride in the mixture should be at least 1.0:1.0 and the ratio should be sufficient to provide a color standard number of less than 150. Typically, the coating composition is in the form of a two-package composition.Also disclosed is a method of coating comprising: (I) coating a substrate with one or more applications of a pigmented basecoating composition to form a basecoat, and (II) coating the basecoat with one or more applications of a transparent topcoating composition to form a transparent topcoat, in which the basecoating composition and/or the topcoating composition comprises the aforesaid non-yellowing coating composition.

The crosslinking agent has at least two functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the copolymer. The thermosetting composition may be in liquid, powder, or dispersed form and may be applied by traditional or electrocoating methods.
