    摘要: A pay-channel transmission system for a CATV has an optical transmission unit and an optical receiver unit. The optical transmission unit includes pay-channel television signals optically multiplexed by a .lambda..sub.1 wavelength semiconductor laser and non-pay-channel television signals optically multiplexed by a .lambda..sub.2 wavelength semiconductor laser. The optical receiver unit includes an optical filter for filtering the .lambda..sub.1 wavelength data. Thus, a non-subscriber having the optical filter is prevented from receiving the pay-channel television signals, and a subscriber having no optical filter is able to receive both the pay-channel television signals and non-pay-channel television signals.

    摘要: A modulated electrical signal Smod produced upon amplitude-modulating a subcarrier having a high frequency (for example, a millimeter-wave band) by a baseband signal SBB to be transmitted and a main carrier MC outputted from a light source are inputted to an external optical modulating portion in an optical transmitter. The external optical modulating portion amplitude-modulates the main carrier MC by the modulated electrical signal Smod, to output a double-modulated optical signal OSdmod to an optical filter portion. The optical filter portion passes only a component of one of sidebands included in the double-modulated optical signal OSdmod, and outputs the component to an optical fiber as an optical signal OS. An optical/electrical converting portion in an optical receiver optical/electrical-converts the optical signal OS transmitted through the optical fiber, to directly obtain a baseband signal SBB. Consequently, the optical receiver is constructed simply and at low cost without requiring a wideband optical/electrical converting element for optical/electrical-converting a high-frequency electrical signal and a high-frequency electrical component (a frequency converter, a demodulator, a semirigid cable or a waveguide) which is very high in cost or is difficult to process.

A pulse signal generating portion 23 generates a pulse signal with the same period and time width as those of a horizontal synchronizing signal in NTSC system color television broadcasting. Delay devices 32.sub.1 to 32.sub.N delay timing of the pulse signal for a randomly predetermined delay amount. Level adjuster 52.sub.1 to 52.sub.N generate a modulating signal by adjusting each pulse base of the delayed pulse signal for a level within a range between 12.5% and 74.375% with respect to a pulse top. Modulators 42.sub.1 to 42.sub.N output a signal obtained by modulating the carrier with the modulating signal. A multiplex portion 24 multiplexes the modulated signals to output a resultant signal as a test signal. The error rate of a QAM signal is evaluated with the test signal. It is therefore possible to evaluate the error rate of the QAM signal in a signal state approximate at the maximum to a state of an actual AM video signal (that is, analogous distribution characteristics of the multiplex signal amplitude). In the error rate evaluation method according to an embodiment of the present invention, it is thus possible to accurately evaluate the error rate of the QAM signal under the strictest conditions, which may occur in the actual, AM video signal, thereby ensuring the reliability of the entire CATV system.

Following an instruction from a viewer, the reception apparatus reproduces the content. The reception apparatus transmits management information including identification information about the content recorded on the hard disk to a management apparatus. The management apparatus stores the information in a management information storage. When the hard disk of the reception apparatus fails, a replacement hard disk is attached to the management apparatus. The management apparatus retrieves, based on the stored management information, the same content as the content recorded on the hard disk of the reception apparatus from a content distribution apparatus, etc., and records the retrieved content on the replacement hard disk. The hard disk of the reception apparatus is then replaced with the replacement hard disk with the content recorded thereon.

    摘要: An optical transmission system provides digital signals which have added bits for error correction by an encoder which are converted into 16-QAM signals with a predetermined carrier frequency by a modulator, and then frequency division muitiplexed with an AM signal so as to be inputted to an optical-electric converter. When the total sum of the light modulation indices of signals to be transmitted is over 1, a light modulation index of an M-QAM signal is set by calculating the light modulation index that marks the onset of diverging from the error rate given by a ratio between receiver noise power and the M-QAM signal power while considering a light modulation index corresponding to a usable transmission margin. The multiplexed signals are transmitted via optical fiber and converted into electric signals by a photo receiver, demodulated by a demodulator, and then outputted after having their errors corrected by an error corrector.
