    摘要: A colloid composition is presented which contains an amphiphilic star polymer having potentially crosslinkable sites on the polymer backbone. The potentially crosslinkable site is either a sterically hindered silane monomer or an acetoacetoxy-containing monomer. When the crosslinkable site is a sterically hindered silane monomer the star polymer also contains an internal catalyst, and when the crosslinkable site is an acetoacetoxy group the colliod composition also contains a non-polymeric polyfunctional amine. The star polymer can be either a random or heteroarm star polymer. The colloid composition is useful in the formation and stabilization of emulsion polymers, as a replacement for surfactants currently used for this purpose. Emulsion polymers formulated with the colloid composition are especially useful for one-part coatings such as paints and adhesives.

    摘要: Latex binders are disclosed which are used to prepare freeze-thaw-stable latex coating compositions which may be free of volatile freeze-thaw/open-time additives. The latex binders are prepared by combining a polymer which is the polymerization product of a polymerizable saccharide monomer, an acrylic monomer and, optionally, a monomer selected from styrenic monomers, ionic monomer and wet adhesion monomers. The latex coating compositions are freeze-thaw stable, even in the total absence of a volatile freeze-thaw additive, and exhibit improved open-time when compared to a latex coating composition which does not contain a volatile freeze-thaw additive. Methods for preparing the freeze-thaw-stable latex coating compositions are also disclosed.

    摘要: Polymerizable, saccharide-derived monomers are prepared in processes which utilize water as the reaction solvent and which preferably do not utilize a cosolvent. The saccharide monomers are prepared from a saccharide unit, an amine selected from the group consisting of R.sup.3 NH.sub.2, where R.sup.3 is selected from the group consisting of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl group, H or NH.sub.2, and a single, polymerizable, .alpha.-methyl styryl moiety. The saccharide monomers are useful in preparing polymers for use in freeze-thaw stable aqueous-based compositions which do not require conventional freeze-thaw solvents and colorimetrically detectable polymers which are used in treating aqueous systems.

    摘要: This invention relates to a two-part system useful for treating proteinaceous substrates. The two-part system has a first part comprising a water-soluble/dispersible reactive polyimido compound and a second part comprising a nucleophilic catalytic agent. The polyimido compounds may be selected from the group consisting of polysuccinimide compounds, polyglutimide compounds, and copolymers of thereof. The polyimido compound may also comprise a functionalizing moiety that provides functionality to the polyimido compound and is preferably derived from a nucleophilic moiety selected from the group consisting of amines, alcohols, phenols, thiols, and carboxylates; and a water-solubilizing/dispersing moiety that provides water-solubility and/or water-dispersibility to the polyimido compound and is preferably derived from a nucleophilic moiety selected from the group consisting of amines, alcohols, phenols, thiols, and carboxylates. The nucleophilic catalytic agent serves to catalyze nuclephilic substitution of the polyimido compound by the proteinaceous substrate. The invention also pertains to a method for treating a proteinaceous substrate with the two-part system and to a composition comprising a mixture of the polyimido compound and the nucleophilic catalytic agent.
