The latex binder contains a polymer which is the emulsion polymerization product of a polymerizable polyethylene glycol (PPEG) monomer, wherein the molecular weight of the ethylene oxide moiety in the PPEG monomer is from about 175 to 1,100, at least one acrylic monomer and, optionally, one or more styrenic, ionic or wet adhesion monomers. Methods for preparing the freeze-thaw stable latex compositions are also disclosed.

Latex paint compositions containing water, pigment and a latex wherein the latex is prepared by emulsion polymerization of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of 0.1 to 0.2 pphm of at least one hydrophobically modified starch having the structure ##STR1## In the above structure, St is a starch base material, R.sup.1 is a dimethylene or trimethylene group, R.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl and aralkenyl groups having 2 to 20 carbon atoms, and Y is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and ammonium. The hydrophobically modified starch is the reaction product of starch and an anhydride moiety and provides the latex paint with improved rheological properties and allows for easier spreading and less dripping of paint.

The invention relates to an emulsion polymerization process for preparing a latex binder for use in paint. The process involves reacting a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymerizable surfactant having a terminal allyl amine moiety with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and ionic monomer at a pH from about 2 to about 7. Significantly lower levels of the polymerizable surfactants are required to control the latex particle size and to stabilize the latex particles at high solids content as compared to the amount of conventional anionic surfactants used to stabilize a latex.

The invention relates to a pressure sensitive adhesive prepared from an aqueous emulsion polymer. The polymer is prepared by reacting at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and from about 0.1 to about 5 weight percent, based on the total weight of ethylenically unsaturated monomer, of a water-soluble or water-dispersible polymerizable surfactant having a terminal allyl amine moiety. The pressure sensitive adhesives may be used in all types of tapes, labels, decals, packaging, electrical insulation, and surgical bandaging.

A pressure sensitive adhesive which is prepared by emulsion polymerizing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 0.01 to 2 pphm of a sterically hindered alkoxylated silane monomer. The silane crosslinks during film formation to provide the adhesive with increased shear strength without the disadvantage of decreased loop tack. The sterically hindered alkoxylated silane monomer has the structure R1—Si—(OR2)n(R3)3−n wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of an alkylene, arylene, and aralkylene group; R2 is independently a sterically hindered alkyl group having 3 to 10 carbon atoms in a straight or branched chain configuration; R3 is a monovalent alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; and n is an integer of from 1 to 3.

The invention relates to an acrylic polymer latex comprising the polymerization product of an acetoacetate moiety of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.22 alkyl groups and X is a halogen, in amounts effective to improve the water resistance of the acrylic latex; and at least one monomer(s) selected from the group consisting of C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 monocarboxylic acids, C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 dicarboxylic acids and their C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 half esters, C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl esters of acrylic acid, C.sub.1 C.sub.10 alkyl esters of methacrylic acid, styrene, halogenated styrene and substituted styrene and latex compositions containing the novel latexes. The invention also relates to methods of improving the water resistance of the coating compositions which include adding to the coating composition the latex which contains an amount of the acetoacetate moiety effective to improve the water resistance of the coating compositions.
