摘要: The invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid molecule that encodes a protein that is effective to preserve progenitor cells, such as hematopoietic progenitor cells. The nucleic acid comprises a sequence defined by SEQ ID NO:1, a homolog thereof, or a fragment thereof. The encoded protein has an amino acid sequence that comprises a sequence defined by SEQ ID NO:2, a homolog thereof or a fragment thereof that contains an amino acid sequence TNNVLQVT. Methods of using the encoded protein for preserving progenitor cells in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo are also described. The invention, therefore, include methods such as myeloablation therapies for cancer treatment wherein myeloid reconstitution is facilitated by means of the specified protein. Other therapeutic utilities are also enabled through the invention, for example, expanding progenitor cell populations ex vivo to increase chances of engraftation, improving conditions for transporting and storing progenitor cells, and facilitating gene therapy to treat and cure a broad range of life-threatening hematologic diseases.

摘要: Secreted FXYD family proteins are expressed by intestinal mucosa and/or associated tissues to regulate cell production in intestinal crypts in response to tissue damage. Such tissue damage may arise from disease, exposure to injurious chemicals (e.g., due to poisoning, chemotherapy, chemical weapons), or exposure to injurious radiation (e.g., due to nuclear power accidents, radiological weapons, radiation therapy). Because these proteins are secreted in response to epithelial tissue damage, some of them are implicated in tissue repair response or an inflammatory response which prolongs or exacerbates the tissue damage. Examples of these proteins include FXYD 3, FXYD 4, and FXYD 5. Diagnostic methods based upon the role of the FXYD proteins in epithelial tissue damage are disclosed. Also provided are antibodies raised against the FXYD family proteins, a kit for detecting at least an epitope of a polypeptide, a method of producing an antibody raised against an epitope of a polypeptide, and a method of diagnosing damage to an epithelial tissue.

摘要: The present invention relates to a class of fluorescent, organic nanofibrils, and particularly the films comprising entangled piling of these nanofibrils exhibiting effective quenching of their fluorescence upon exposure the vapor of explosives. The invention also relates to a sensor and a method for sensing the explosives vapor and other volatile organic compounds, including the explosives taggants through the modulation of the fluorescence of the nanofibril film and the electrical conductivity of the nanofibrils. The invention also relates to a development of synthetic methods, protocols and techniques that leads to production of various arylene-ethynylene macrocycle (AEM) molecules, which consist of a shape-persistent, toroidal scaffold in planar conformation, with minimal ring strain and highly tunable ring sizes (from 0.5 nm to above 10 nm). The invention also relates to an approach to optimization of the one-dimensional molecular arrangement along the long axis of the nanofibril, which provides increased exciton (excited state) migration (via cofacial intermolecular electronic coupling) and charge transport (via pi-electronic delocalization). A combination of long-range exciton migration and efficient charge transport makes the nanofibrils ideal as sensory materials for detecting explosives and other volatile organic compounds through both optical and electrical sensing mechanisms.

摘要: A magneto-striction based, passive optical current sensor is provided that is located at high voltage and communicates to ground level via an optical fiber. The optical current sensor includes a ferromagnetic core, a modulator of magnetostrictive material, e.g. Terfenol-D in a preferred embodiment, that responds to the magnetic field, and two or more matched fiber Bragg gratings that convert this response into a wavelength modulated optical signal that is transmitted via an optical fiber to ground level electronics. To linearize the output of the optical current sensor, the optical sensor includes arrangements to provide both mechanical and magnetic bias to the modulator.
