Abstract: An intake system of an engine includes an engine and an intake manifold. The intake manifold defines individual intake air passageways each connecting one of cylinders to a volume chamber. Each of the individual intake passageways includes a first route and a second route. The first route has a natural frequency, of an air column, synchronized with a first revolution higher than an engine revolution for maximum torque such that a dynamic supercharging effect is obtained at the first revolution. The second route has a natural frequency, of an air column, synchronized with a second revolution higher than the engine revolution for maximum torque such that a dynamic supercharging effect is obtained at the second revolution. The second revolution differs from the first revolution. A difference between the first and second revolutions is set lower than or equal to 15% of a maximum engine revolution.

Abstract: An air intake apparatus of a multi-cylinder engine includes an intake air inlet passage, an intake air distribution portion, a plurality of independent intake air passages, and a secondary gas inlet passage. The intake air inlet passage has one end portion attached to a throttle valve, and the other end connected to an intake air distribution portion. The intake air distribution portion has a space therein. The secondary gas inlet passage is connected at a part spaced apart, in the intake air inlet passage, from the throttle valve. The intake air distribution portion has a reflux passage which is a passage that connects the space and a part between the one end portion and the other end in the intake air inlet passage. The reflux passage is a passage which refluxes fresh air and secondary gas introduced from the intake air inlet passage to the intake air inlet passage.

Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation system for a multi-cylinder engine is provided, which includes an exhaust manifold connected to a cylinder head, a catalyst connected to a downstream end of the exhaust manifold in terms of an exhaust gas flow, an EGR gas outlet provided downstream of the catalyst, an in-head EGR passage penetrating the cylinder head, and an EGR pipe extending from the EGR gas outlet and directly connected to an inlet of the in-head EGR passage to lead EGR gas thereto. The catalyst is disposed so that the exhaust gas flows therein from a first side to a second side in an engine cylinder lined-up direction. The EGR gas outlet is located on the second side with respect to the center of the engine in the cylinder lined-up direction, and the inlet of the in-head EGR passage is located in the first side with respect to the engine center.

The system includes a chamber room formed in an intermediate section of an intake passage, an intercooler disposed inside the chamber room, an intake air inlet chamber formed in a part of the chamber room upstream of the intercooler, an introducing portion for introducing intake air into the intake air inlet chamber, and a baffle plate dividing the intake air inlet chamber into an upstream space communicating with the introducing portion and a downstream space communicating to the introducing portion via the upstream space. When the engine is in a low engine load operation, the intake air mainly flows through the upstream space to an intercooler side via the baffle plate, and when the engine is in a high engine load operation, the intake air flows through the upstream and downstream spaces to the intercooler side via the baffle plate.

Abstract: An intake device of an engine comprises an intake manifold of a four-cylinder inline engine and a water-cooling type of intercooler. The intake manifold includes a downstream branch pipe portion connecting to cylinders, a chamber portion connecting to the downstream branch pipe portion, and an upstream intake pipe portion connecting to the chamber portion. A rectangular opening portion having a vertically-long shape is formed at the upstream intake pipe portion. The intercooler includes an intercooler body portion having a pair of faces which has the widest face-area and faces to each other in an engine width direction. The intercooler body portion is installed in the chamber portion, by being inserted through the rectangular opening portion, so as to divide an inside of the chamber portion into two parts in the engine width direction thereby.
