Abstract:
A method for shear-assisted electrochemical exfoliation of a layered van der Waals solid (such as graphite, MoS2, BN, or WS2) into a two dimensional material (such as graphene where the original layered van der Waals solid is graphite) can at least partly overcome certain limitations of electrochemical exfoliation techniques with shear-induced effects.
Abstract:
An apparatus for use in promoting motility of flagellar cells includes an acoustic energy emission module configured to generate ultrasound energy, the module being configured to generate ultrasound waves within a frequency range of about 2 MHz and about 120 MHz, and an applicator module configured to direct the generated ultrasound waves to a locus of the cells for a duration of between about 5 seconds and about 35 seconds.
Abstract:
A microfluidic device for separating or sorting particles in a fluid including: a substrate; a plurality of interdigital transducers on the substrate; a microfluidic channel adapted to have fluid flow within, located over the interdigital transducers, the microfluidic channel having a width, wherein: the interdigital transducers are located within the width of the microfluidic channel; and application of a signal to the interdigital transducers produces a force field at an angle to the fluid flow direction within the microfluidic channel. In addition, a method for separating or sorting particles using a device having a plurality of interdigital transducers on a substrate and a microfluidic channel located over the interdigital transducers, the method including: positioning the interdigital transducers within the microfluidic channel width; inserting into the microfluidic channel a solution having particles with various properties; and applying a signal to the interdigital transducers to produce a force field at an angle to a fluid flow direction within the microfluidic channel to sort and/or physically separate the particles into groups of particles with the same property.
Abstract:
A microparticle and/or nanoparticle separation, filtration and/or enriching device. The device comprises a flow passage through which can be directed a liquid suspension supporting microparticles and/or nanoparticles therein, and at least one packed bed of particles physically retained within the flow passage through which can pass therethrough the liquid suspension. The device further comprises an ultrasonic actuation system for mechanically activating the or each packed bed during passage therethrough of the liquid suspension.
