摘要: Methods and apparatus relate to removing selenium from a fluid. The fluid includes non-selenium constituents that are insoluble at a pH in which the fluid is passed through a sorbent bed in order to remove the selenium. Fouling of the sorbent bed can thereby result due to accumulation of the non-selenium constituents, which are precipitated solid materials. Intermittent washing of the sorbent bed with a heated and alkaline wash dissolves and removes the non-selenium constituents to maintain efficient operation and sustain selenium removal performance.

摘要: A plurality of serial data streams are transmitted on a corresponding plurality of lines at a common frequency in equal groups of symbols. A framing signal composed of groups of symbols corresponding in number to groups of data symbols is transmitted on an additional control line. Each group of symbols in the framing signal includes a majority of symbols capable of representing a first plurality of code words and a second plurality, substantially less than the first plurality, of valid code words, and a minority of symbols which constitute parity check symbols. Each of the valid code words consists of a first sub-group of similar symbols and a second plurality of similar symbols. For some of the valid code words the symbols in the first sub-group are similar to the symbols in the second sub-group. For other valid code words the symbols in the first sub-group are different from the symbols in the second sub-group. The valid code words correspond to groups which represent (a) start of a data packet or block; (b) data/(c) a gap between groups of data; and (d) an idle state. The sequence of groups in the framing signal is monitored by means of a state machine.

摘要: Synthesis of a support material impregnated with silver sulfide provides a sorbent composition. Generating the silver sulfide relies on reaction of sulfur dioxide and one of hydrogen gas and hydrogen sulfide in presence of the support material following silver loading of the support material. Contacting a fluid stream with the sorbent composition removes heavy metal from the fluid stream.

摘要: There is provided a method for removing selenium from an aqueous influent, comprising: adding a water-soluble reducing agent to an aqueous influent containing an oxidized selenium compound (Sex, wherein x is the oxidation state and x>0); reducing said Sex using said reducing agent at a temperature; removing said Se0 from said aqueous influent using a sorbent or a technique selected from the group consisting of filtration, coagulation, flocculation, clarification and centrifugation.

摘要: The release by trichomonads of a hydrolase that hydrolyzes a narrowly defined class of substrates at a low pH without interference from hydrolases that are unrelated to trichomoniasis is the basis for a selective diagnostic assay for trichomoniasis that measures hydrolysis of any of these substrates by vaginal fluid at a low pH. Selective assays for trichomoniasis are also obtained by removing particulate matter from a sample of vaginal fluid to extract a fraction devoid of particles greater than a selected size, and where desired, combining the extracted fraction with any of certain specified hydrolase inhibitors, then testing the fraction for enzymatic hydrolase activity. These qualities of trichomoniasis are the basis for a series of diagnostic tests and test devices that produce results that are detectable by visual and other means with a high degree of accuracy.
