摘要： A downhole tool, such as a packer or liner hanger, has a mandrel on which slips are disposed for engaging a surrounding tubular downhole. When the tool is being run in or out of the hole, at least one magnetic component magnetically retains the slip adjacent the mandrel so the slip can be held away from the surrounding tubular. When the tool is set downhole, the initial magnetic retention can be broken, and the slips can be moved away from the mandrel to engage the surface of the surrounding tubular.

摘要： An apparatus for connecting user equipment to a broadband network includes a chassis having attachment points for connection to a supporting surface and a guide that permits entry of a communication cable. A cable termination unit may be mounted on the chassis such that a cable that is led through the guide can be connected and provided with a termination to which functional connections can be made. A cover may be mounted on the chassis in such a way as to be removable and reattachable to allow access to the chassis. The chassis may include mounting points for connecting at least one functional module to the communication cable and for allowing different communication functions to be provided to user equipment that is connected to the network via the apparatus.

摘要： A method for enhancing the security of a quantum key distribution (QKD) system having QKD stations Alice and Bob. The method includes encrypting key bits generated by a true random number generator (TRNG) and sent to a polarization or phase modulator to encode weak optical pulses as qubits to be shared between Alice and Bob. Key bit encryption is achieved by using a shared password and a stream cipher. Bob obtains at least a subset of the original key bits used by Alice by utilizing the same stream cipher and the shared password.

摘要： A heater for a liquid has a combustion chamber, a jacket for the liquid extending about the combustion chamber and a burner head assembly connected to the combustion chamber. The burner head assembly includes a housing having a burner mounted thereon and a hollow interior. A control module and a fan are mounted in the hollow interior, the fan being connected to an electric motor. A compressor and a fuel pump are mounted on the housing and are operatively connected to the electric motor. The control module may include controls for exercising components of the heater prior to combustion, thereby verifying operation of these components. Preferably there is a speed control for the motor, such as a closed loop speed control which regulates motor speed and accordingly output of the heater. Preferably there is a backup system using a lookup table in the event that the closed loop speed control fails. Also preferably there is provision for monitoring flame sensor functionality by providing an indicator light which mirrors operation of the flame sensor. The heater may have a selective soft start for the coolant pump which operates only when required so as to reduce unnecessary chatter on the motor relay. A system is also provided for distinguishing true overcurrent faults from overcurrents arising from voltage changes during starting of the vehicle engine. Reignition algorithms are provided to restart the burner in the event of flame sputters caused, for example, by fuel bubbles, but shut off the heater in the event that the fuel is truly cut off.

摘要： In a quantum key distribution (QKD) system, a method of autocalibrating the gating of a single-photon detector (SPD) unit is disclosed. The method includes exchanging photon signals (P1, P2) to establish a bit-error rate (BER). The method also includes performing a detector gate signal timing scan (314) that varies the signal arrival time (T) to establish an optimum arrival time (TMIN) corresponding to an optimum (e.g., minimum) BER. Detector gate signal timing dithering is then performed (318). This involves varying the detector gate signal arrival times about the optimum arrival time to ensure that the QKD system operates at or near an optimum BER.
