An improved process for removing metals from heavy oils and other hydrocarbon feed streams is disclosed. The process includes adding phosphorus sulfide to the hydrocarbon feed stream under suitable demetallizing conditions. It is believed that phosphorus sulfide reacts with the metals contained in the hydrocarbon containing feed stream to form oil insoluble compounds that can be removed from the hydrocarbon containing feed stream by any conventional method, such as filtration, centrifugation, or decantation.

Unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated using a catalyst comprising nickel on a calcium phosphate support. The catalyst can be used in combination with a promoter selected from at least one of barium and uranium. Aromatic compounds such as benzene can be hydrogenated in this process. The catalytic activity of the described catalyst is sufficiently great as to permit hydrogenation under relatively mild conditions, including liquid phase hydrogenation of aromatics, thus prolonging the active life of the catalyst.

A catalyst consisting essentially of nickel, a promoter selected from the group consisting of barium and uranium and a calcium phosphate support having a Ca:P atomic ratio in the range of 1.4:1 to 2.3:1, is formed by impregnating a calcium phosphate gel with suitable compounds of nickel and either barium or uranium. The resulting catalysts are useful for reacting carbon monoxide and steam and in steam reforming processes for producing methane.

A method for preparing cuprous carboxylates (Cu(I) carboxylates) is provided wherein Cu(II) carboxylates are reacted with copper powder in an aromatic solvent under a reducing atmosphere, optionally in the presence of at least one of a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride. Also, a method for preparing desired Cu(II) carboxylates is provided wherein a Cu(II) carboxylate having fewer carbon atoms is reacted with a carboxylic acid corresponding to the desired Cu(II) carboxylate. The invention method reactions achieve good conversions with rapid rates of reaction. The Cu(I) carboxylates produced according to the invention method are useful as reagents or in the preparation of olefin complexing reagents.
