The invention relates to a method for transmitting packet switched data in a mobile communications system using an ARQ protocol. In the method the receiver requests, if necessary, retrasnmissions of the originally sent transmission unit, until the quality of the combined transmission unit formed of the originally sent transmission unit and its retransmitted copies corresponds to the predetermined quality level. The signal is not detected until after this. If the packet is interleaved and encoded and it is found out that the packet is not faultless, retransmissions of the transmission units of the packet that are of the poorer quality are requested. The invention also relates to a mobile communications system implementing the method of the invention.

The transmitter sends transmission units according to the order. Ordering and transmission are repeated until the quality measured by the receiver from each packet exceeds the predetermined quality value and the data which is to be transmitted and consists of packets is transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver. The idea of the present invention is to enable the transmission of control information via several logical channels and to select the transmission channel dynamically by using a predefined selection rule. There are at least two logical channels that can be selected for the transmission of information. These logical channels should preferably include at least one signalling channel which is allocated in a connection-specific manner. The signalling channels which are allocated in a connection-specific manner can be signalling channels which use the capacity of the traffic channel of independent singalling channels which are allocated separately from traffic channels. At least one of the logical channels available for selection should preferably also be a shared channel allocated to several connections for joint signalling. The parameters of the selection rule used in the logical channel selection can include, for example, the effect of the use of the logical channels on the quality of service of the connection which uses the traffic channel, the current usage rate of the logical channels, the number and priority of messages to be sent, and an estimate of the number and priority of messages to be sent in the near future.

A method and system for performing a pre-reserved handover in a mobile communciation system is suggested, wherein an additional handover preparation step is performed by determining at least one candidate base station in advance, to which handover is likely to be performed. An additional downlink connection to the at least one candidate base station is established before handover execution is performed. Thereby, proper handover can be ensured for cell environments in which a serving cell disappears very quickly from a mobile station.
