The present invention provides a unit battery of sealed alkaline storage battery comprising a plurality of cells each of which comprises a container in which are inserted an alkali electrolyte and an electrode group comprising a plurality of positive plates and a plurality of negative plates with separators provided between the adjacent plates and which is sealed by a cap provided with a safety valve, the adjacent cells being electrically connected, wherein at least a part of the outermost portion of the electrode group in the cell contacts with the container, the adjacent cells contact with each other at at least a part of their container and a space through which air can pass in at least one direction is provided between the adjacent cells, the unit battery being constrained by holders at a part or the whole surface of both ends in the direction of arranging of the cells. The present invention further provides a sealed alkaline storage battery system comprising an assembled battery which consists of a plurality of the unit batteries.

A cell for sealed nickel-metal hydride storage battery having a high energy density and a long cycle life is disclosed. It comprises a battery casing made of a synthetic resin which accommodates a power-generating unit including a hydrogen storage alloy negative electrode whose hydrogen equilibrium pressure is 0.01-0.1 MPa at 45.degree. C., when H/M=0.5, and a lid for sealing an open end of the casing provided with a safety vent whose operation pressure is 0.2-0.8 MPa. A pressure-resistant strength of the battery casing is in a range of 0.7-2.0 MPa and set higher than the operation pressure of the safety vent by 0.5 MPa or more.

A battery module is constructed with a plurality of prismatic cells. Each cell comprises a prismatic cell case having short lateral walls and long lateral walls, a group of electrode plates constituted by laminating a plurality of positive and negative electrode plates parallel to the long lateral walls of the cell case with intervening separators therebetween, and collector plates of positive and negative polarities, respectively bonded to the positive and negative electrode plates at lateral opposite ends of the group of electrode plates. Connection projections are formed on the collector plates, these being fitted into corresponding holes in the short lateral walls of the cell case, whereby the collector plates are fixed on the short lateral walls of the cell case.

A battery case has an inner surface and an outer surface of each respective corner section formed of a curvature. The thickness of the corner section is 2.5 mm, a radius of curvature of the outer surface is 5.0 mm, a radius of curvature of the inner surface is 2.5 mm, and a thickness of a small thickness section between the corner section and the flat plane section is 2.0 mm. The position of the thinnest wall section coincides with a position where the radius of a circular arc forming the inner surface of the corner section crosses perpendicularly the outer side surface of the battery case.

A group of electrodes are accommodated in a prismatic cell case of a rechargeable battery. Intervening separators are provided between positive and negative electrode plates arranged alternately in parallel to long lateral walls of the cell case. The positive electrode plates each include a lead portion having a surface on which at least one lead plate is attached. Lateral edges of the positive electrode plates protrude beyond the negative electrode plates on one side, and lateral edges of the negative electrode plates protrude beyond the group of positive electrode plates on the opposite side. The protruding portions form the lead portions. Upper open ends of the cell cases are closed by an integral lid member.

Positive and negative electrode collector plates in the cell cases are respectively attached to the base ends of the frame fittings. End frame fittings that have base ends and protruding portions for cell cases are located at both outer ends of the rechargeable battery for connecting the cell cases to outside terminals. Connection terminals that have protruding portions are connected to the end frame fittings at both outer ends of the rechargeable battery.
