In an optical information recording/reproducing apparatus for recording/reproducing information on or from an optical disc, a laser beam is focused on the surface of a substrate of the optical disc so that the intensity or a high frequency component of a reflected laser beam is used to detect contaminants on the optical disc surface or a test signal containing a plurality frequency components and recorded on a specified track on the optical disc is reproduced and detected so that the difference between amplitudes of the frequency components is used to detect contaminants on the optical disc surface. Scattering of the laser beam can be prevented and recording/reproducing can be effected with a proper level of laser power.

The present invention relates to a magnetic disk control unit which can accomplish active interchange of firmwares. Thus, in this invention, a firmware constituting the magnetic disk control unit includes an internal table area for retaining various data necessary for control, a save area for temporarily saving, of the data in the internal table area, data necessary before and after interchange of the firmware while the firmware undergoes active interchange, a first interruption control section serving, as interruption handling functions, a normal function to refer to the internal table area in accordance with an interruption for advancing to processing to the interruption and a busy response function to perform a busy response to the host unit during the firmware active-interchange, and a second interruption control section serving, as an interruption handling function, only a busy response function to accomplish a busy response to the host unit during the firmware active-interchange. This invention is successfully applicable to systems required to continuously run for 24 hours.

The present invention relates to an outline font expanding method and an outline font expanding device each of which can reproduce faithfully the line width of an original outline font. The coordinate system for vector data is defined on the boundaries between dots to create an outline font on the boundaries. The number of dots in the main scanning direction is calculated as a unit change when the outline font is moved by one dot in the secondary scanning direction. A value obtained by dividing the unit change by 2 is added to the coordinate in the main scanning direction of the outline font. while the scanning line is moved dot by dot in the main scanning direction, the intersection of the scanning line and the outline font is obtained at each move position. Thus, the filling range over the scanning line is defined in the main scanning direction. This invention is applicable to a method which fills the inside of an outline font drawn, based on vector data and then forms a dot pattern of a character, symbol, graph, or the like.

This invention relates to an optical disk, in which part of the sectors are reproduction-only sectors and remaining sectors are recording-reproduction sectors. Data and first error correcting codes for the data are recorded in advance in the reproduction-only sectors, and second error correcting codes for data over a plurality of reproduction-only sectors are recorded in advance in other reproduction-only sectors. At data reproduction, only sectors which are unrecoverable by the first error correction codes undergo error correction by the second error correcting codes, and the corrected data with the first error correcting codes being appended are recorded in the recording-reproduction sectors. Later on, when data in sectors unrecoverable by the first error correcting codes are needed, the above-mentioned recorded sectors are read out. Data storage about twice the capacity of the data recording areas is made possible by adopting the PWM (pulse width modulation) recording for the data reproduction-only area and the PPM (pulse position modulation) recording for the recording-reproduction area.

The apparatus gives a modified syndrome as an input to a generalized decoding procedure for the error correcting code free or erasure correction to obtain an error value as an intermediate value, dividing the intermediate value by the sum of error location numbers to obtain a new intermediate value, adding the sum of the new intermediate values to the product sum of syndromes and expansion coefficients of partial error location polynomial to re-compute the new intermediate value, thus successively computing the new intermediate values, and thereby providing new means to effect the generalized decoding procedure free of erasure correction even when no error location number is known in advance, to make error correction based on a computed error location number executable, along with error correction based on a known error location number.
