In general terms, the present invention includes a process for producing a new zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) offering improved seal compatibility characteristics in engine and transmission oil packages. The present invention additionally includes zinc dialkyldithiophosphate produced in accordance with the disclosed methodologies, and oil additives, lubricants, and engines and transmission comprising the zinc dialkyldithiophosphate of the present invention.

A fully formulated lubricating oil, lubricated surface, and lubricant additive concentrates for lubricants providing reduced sludge formation. The fully formulated lubricating oil composition has therein at least one succinimide dispersant derived from a polyalkylene compound having from about 50 to about 85% vinylidene double bonds in the compound, a metal containing detergent, at least one wear reducing agent, at least one antioxidant, and a hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound as a friction modifier. The lubricating oil composition is also substantially free of molybdenum compounds.

A lubricant composition method of using the lubricant composition. The lubricant composition contains a base oil of lubricating viscosity and from about 5 to about 30 percent by weight of an additive comprising a shear stable olefin copolymer derived from a copolymer having a number average molecular weight ranging from about 50,000 to about 250,000. The shear stable olefin copolymer has a shear stability index of less than about 40, a polydispersity of not more than about 1.5, and a thickening efficiency of greater than about 1.8, and provides viscosity index improving properties to the lubricant composition.

A lubricant composition, additive concentrate, and method for lubricating an engine. The crankcase lubricant has less than 30 weight percent of a relatively low Noack volatility base oil and a viscosity additive. The viscosity additive has a minor effective amount of sacrificial polymeric viscosity index improver having a shear stability index (SSI) of greater than about 45 and a major amount of a viscosity index improver having an SSI of less than about 26. The minor amount of sacrificial viscosity index improver additive is effective to provide a lubricant composition having a ratio of absolute viscosity increase at 40° C. to an absolute viscosity increase at 40° C. of an RL 216 reference oil of less than about 0.8.

A novel additive comprising a highly grafted, multi-functional olefin copolymer comprising a graft and amine-derivatized copolymer prepared from ethylene and at least one C.sub.3 to C.sub.23 alpha-monoolefin and, optionally, a polyene, wherein the copolymer of ethylene and at least one C.sub.3 to C.sub.23 alpha-monoolefin has grafted thereon from 0.3 to 0.75 carboxylic groups per 1000 number average molecular weight units of olefin copolymer and wherein the olefin copolymer has a number average molecular weight of between 20,000 and 150,000, and lubricating oil concentrates and compositions containing the same are provided.
