The canister includes a vent port for venting air to the atmosphere upon adsorption of hydrocarbons and for admitting air upon the desorption of hydrocarbon during the purging operation of the canister. A purge port is adapted for connection to the engine to allow the desorbed hydrocarbons to flow into the engine. A plurality of holes is formed through the side wall of the canister housing and are formed at a location remote from the purge port between the vent port and the purge port to define a buffer zone. The holes are adapted for communication with the fuel tank to allow fuel vapor to flow through the tank through the plurality of holes into the buffer zone. Thus, vapor purged directly from the tank to the engine is buffered through the carbon canister to prevent any vapor purge spikes creating the undesirably over-rich condition.

The carbon/plastic brick may reduce or minimize the number of discrete parts used in a fuel tank assembly, as it can be integrated into either a fuel tank or fuel tank attachment, thereby eliminating the need for a separate carbon canister. The carbon/plastic brick minimizes or eliminates carbon dust associated adsorption/desorption cycles and also eliminates the need for apparatus to maintain carbon bed integrity.

The outer duct sealingly couples to the sleeve insert proximate first and second ends of the inner sleeve and at the rib. The sleeve insert and the outer duct are formed of plastic materials which are coupled by welding or via o-rings placed on the sleeve insert. Cavities, in the vicinity of the apertures, are formed in the outer duct. The cavities, which are fluidly coupled to the sleeve insert via the apertures, attenuate noise.
