    摘要: A programmable controller for switch-mode power converters that operates in a digital domain without reliance on operation software and the ability to vastly reduce or eliminate analog circuitry. The digital controller is re-programmable. In one embodiment, the substantially digital portion of the controller is a Field Programmable Gate Array that controls operation of the converter by generally converting an analog reference signal(s) (e.g. the voltage output) into the digital domain. The controller then can perform distributed arithmetic to generate a square wave signal capable of controlling at least a main switch of the converter. The present invention can, if desired, essentially eliminate analog controllers in power conversion systems such as switch-mode converters.

    摘要: A silicon-on-silicon dual MCM apparatus comprising a printed circuit board having a voltage isolation boundary contained therein supporting a pair of multi-chip modules on either side of the voltage isolation boundary. The MCMs safely convey signals across the isolation boundary via discrete optical coupling means or the like. The optical coupling means allow safe and efficient conveyance of signals across the voltage isolation boundary enabling a designer to group high voltage components on one side of the boundary and low voltage components on the other side of the boundary. This obviates to a degree the need for multi-layered PCBs. A relatively large number of passive components (resistors and capacitors) are integrated into a silicon substrate with flip-chip analog integrated circuits (ICs). Operational characteristics of the controller are verified after integration and are compared to the discrete version. High voltage isolation requirements, interference, and noise are all considered to determine the most critical portions of the dual MCM layout and design.

    摘要: The process is provided involving formation of multilayer components in which a photoresist-type material is used not only as a conventional patterning material, but also as an insulating and/or planarizing material between magnetic or electrically conductive layers. A variety of integrated CMOS/micromagnetic components are thereby capable of being formed, including components containing planar inductors and transformers. Additionally, a particular technique is used to etch gold-containing seed layers from a substrate surface without damaging an electroplated copper coil. Also provided is a magnetic material particularly useful in devices such as inductors and transformers. The material is an amorphous iron-cobalt-phosphorus alloy having a composition of CoxPyFez, where x+y+z=100, x is 5 to 15, y is 13 to 20, and z is the remainder. The alloy typically exhibits a coercivity of 0.1 to 0.5 Oe, an electrical resistivity of 100 to 150 &mgr;&OHgr;-cm, and a saturation magnetization of about 16 to about 19 kG, all of which represent improvements over Permalloy.

    摘要: The present invention is a planar spiral inductor a top magnetic layer a bottom magnetic layer; and a plurality of conductive coils disposed between said top magnetic layer and said bottom magnetic layer. A significant difference from prior art is that the top and bottom magnetic layers have their centers effectively cut out using lithographic techniques or other techniques to frame the core of the conductive spirals. An advantage of this structure over the prior art is that when magnetic anisotropies other than shape are kept small, then the magnetic configuration will produce a magnetostatic shape anisotropy such that the easy axis (low energy direction of magnetization) lies parallel to the legs of a rectangular frame or the circumference of a circular frame, as will be described. During operation of the inductor, the field produced by the coils flows in a radial direction and will be perpendicular to the easy axis direction thereby causing magnetization reversal to occur by rotation while advantageously utilizing the full structure in this mode.

    摘要: An encapsulated package for a power magnetic device and a method of manufacture therefor. The power magnetic device has a magnetic core subject to magnetostriction when placed under stress. The package includes: (1) compliant material disposed about at least a portion of the magnetic core and (2) an encapsulant substantially surrounding the compliant material and the magnetic core, the compliant material providing a medium for absorbing stress between the encapsulant and the magnetic core, the compliant material reducing the magnetostriction upon the magnetic core caused by the stress from the encapsulant. In one embodiment, the encapsulant includes a vent to an environment surrounding the package. The vent provides pressure relief for the compliant material, allowing the compliant material to substantially eliminate the magnetostrictive effects.
