    摘要: The present invention is directed to an internally threaded prevailing-torque type self-locking fastener which employs a patch of fused thermoplastic material as the locking element and which satisfies the functional torque requirements of both IFI 100/107 (1987) and IFI 101 (1987). In accordance with the present invention the fastener comprises a metal body having a bore extending to its opposing ends, the bore having a threaded surface; a patch of polymeric material applied and fused to a portion of the threaded surface; and the fastener meeting the prevailing-torque characteristics specified in both IFI 100/107 (1987) and IFI 101 (1987). The invention is also directed to a process wherein an internally threaded fastener is processed by first applying and fusing a polymeric resin material to at least a portion of the fastener's threaded surface and thereafter conditioning the frictional properties of the fastener such that its prevailing torque performance characteristics meet both IFI 100/107 (1987) and IFI 101 (1987).

    摘要: Apparatus and method employed in applying a useful coating to fasteners is disclosed. Particularly, a resin material in powder form is preferably applied to a selected surface of the fastener to cover a desired length of the threads of the fastener. The apparatus includes a support for moving the fasteners deposited thereon to a position where the coating is applied, and a positioning device is provided to insure that the fastener is peripherally located for application of the coating. A cam mechanism associated with a plurality of tubes provides movement of the tubes for application of the resin material to the fasteners. The fasteners are subsequently removed from the support by fluid pressure.

    摘要: A method is provided for the continuous manufacture of self-locking internally threaded fasteners having a locking body or patch comprised of resilient thermoplastic material, applied to the fastener in powder form. A support member having a plurality of cavities for receiving said fasteners, and a nozzle associated with each of said cavities, is moved along a path through a plurality of locations wherein the fastener is deposited at a cavity aligned with a respective nozzle at a first location, material is forced through the nozzle onto the fastener at a second location, the fasteners are removed from the respective support at a third location, and the nozzles are purged of material at a fourth location prior to the initiation of a subsequent sequence of operations by the apparatus.

    摘要: An apparatus for generating a powder stream to be applied to a work piece includes a powder reservoir, a mixing chamber, a powder metering valve, a transfer conduit, and a nozzle. The metering valve allows control of the powder flow from the reservoir into the mixing chamber where it is dispersed with and entrained in an air flow entering the chamber through an aspirating inlet. The air entrained powder is then conveyed from the mixing chamber via the transfer conduit to the nozzle. The nozzle includes a controllable gas flow input and a powder stream generating passageway configured and associated with the transfer conduit to generate a reduced pressure in the conduit and mixing chamber which draws the air borne powder from the chamber into the nozzle. One or more of the individual components are adjustable to control the size, configuration, thickness or other parameters of the coating on the work piece as a result of the applied powder stream.

    摘要: This invention relates to threaded fasteners, an apparatus for making such threaded fasteners and methods of fastening parts. The tip of the shank of a threaded fastener has at least one thread coated with a lubricating or masking material to reduce the drive torque necessary for fastening as well as provide a protective coating for the fastener during subsequent processing operations. The drill tip of the disclosed self-drilling fasteners is coated with a lubricating material to reduce drive torque and to eliminate binding when drilling through fibrous material. The present invention also prevents the build-up of corrosion inhibiting materials on threaded fasteners attached to parts to be fastened together. A masking and/or insulating material is first applied to the threaded fasteners attached to the parts to substantially prevent applied corrosion inhibitor from adhering to the threads of the fastener. A method of fastening parts, including fibrous material such as carpet or sound insulation, is also accomplished through practice of the present invention. The apparatus of the present invention provides a resin type stream entrained in a gaseous jet directed through a nozzle onto the threads of a fastener. The apparatus provides selectable thread coverage, including complete coverage of all threads.

    摘要: Improved apparatus and process for applying locking patches of resilient resin to internally threaded articles such as nuts having openings at both ends of the threaded portions in which apparatus and process, a support and treating member, preferably a rotatable, circular table with edge notches complementary to a portion of the exterior of a threaded article to be treated, receives a succession of threaded articles heated to a temperature above the melting point of the resin to be applied and moves the articles along a path for treatment with the axes of the threaded articles in an up and down position and with the openings at the upper and lower ends of the threaded portions substantially uncovered, conduits on the support and treating member are associated with each threaded article to direct particles of heat fusible resin upwardly through the opening at the lower end of the article against a portion of the threaded surface of the article to form a first deposit of resin on an area of the threaded surface during movement along a first portion of the treatment path and a turning device at an intermediate location on the treatment path turns each threaded article, as it reaches that location, a predetermined angle so that the conduit associated with the article directs resin against a further area of the threaded surface to form a second deposit of resin during movement along a further portion of the treatment path. The temperature of the article, the rate of movement along the treatment path, the supply of the resin particles, the location of the turning device, and the turning angle may be correlated so that thin edge portions of the first resin deposit may be spaced from or may be overlapped by thin edge portions of the second resin deposit up to an extent that the total thickness of resin in the overlapped portions may approximate the thickness of the central portions of the first and second deposits of resin.
