The electrical conductivity of solid, impregnable materials, such as cellulose-based insulating materials, can be increased by supplying to the solid impregnable material a substance with the ability, during polymerization of a pyrrole compound comprising at least one of the substances pyrrole and N-methylpyrrole, to give a polymer with higher electrical conductivity than the solid impregnable material, as well as a pyrrole compound of the kind stated, whereafter the pyrrole compound is transformed into a polymer in the solid, impregnable material.

A gas sensing device having a semiconductor substrate, wherein the semiconductor substrate is covered by an insulator layer, on which an intermediate layer is formed, and subsequently covered by a gas sensing catalytic layer, wherein the intermediate layer and the catalytic layer are made of different materials. The gas sensing device may optionally have dispersed between the insulator layer and the intermediate layer a catalytic metal layer. The gas sensing device provides improved stability and speed of response, even when used at high ambient temperatures, such as temperatures found in combustion systems. A method for making the gas sensing device is also disclosed.

This invention relates to a practical low cost method and devices which exploits the benefits of several photo-assisted analytical techniques involving controlled light sources. The method comprise the use of a program controlled display (like computer, mobile telephones to TV screens) used as a light source for illuminating a detector specially suited to capture the light interaction with a test environment, allowing to generate distinctive spectra and chemical or biochemical images of the environment. Additionally, the information can be acquired in situ but immediately analyzed on line via internet.

An analytical method of qualitative and optionally quantitative determination of the occurrence of polymerization/coagulation in a fluid containing polymerizable/coagulable components is described. The method comprises the steps of directing incident beams of electromagnetic radiation through a transparent support on which a film of electrically conducting material is placed, to the back of the film, at angles equal to or greater than the critical angle for total reflection, and measuring changes in the reflected beams due to changes in the surface plasmon resonance angle. Repeated measurements are correlated to the occurrence and magnitude of changes with qualitative and optionally quantitative occurrence of polymerization/coagulation in the fluid. The analytical method is not volume dependent since only one (small) surface of the measuring instrument needs to be in contact with the fluid. Further, the method can also be applied to poorly transparent fluids such as blood.

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing a micromachined structure to be at least partly released from a substrate surface. A surface contact area, over which structure and the said substrate surface are in surface contact with each other during the manufacturing step, is divided into at least a first and a second contact zone, the adhesiveness between the structure and the substrate being greater in the first contact zone than in the second contact zone. As a manufacturing step, or as a step subsequent to the manufacturing, the structure can be released from the substrate surface at least over said second contact zone. The completed structure may also be completely loose from the substrate. The invention is also directed to a micromachined structure manufactured according to the method.

A method of preparing an implant body in order to optimize the healing time of said implant, comprising bringing the implant body for a limited period of time into contact with a hydrogen peroxide solution at least on the surfaces intended to come into contact with surrounding tissue when implanted, the treated surfaces being cleaned by rinsing. The treatment of the implant surface with hydrogen peroxide can be supplemented with incorporation of biomolecules, such as peptides, proteins and steroids, and also other substances such as inorganic ions and crystals. The compounds to be coupled to the implant surface may promote the healing and/or binding of the surrounding tissue.
