A thermal spray apparatus for depositing a coating on to a substrate is provided which includes a plasma generator for selectively changing gas from a gaseous state to a plasma, and apparatus for filtering plasma. Powder particles entrained in the plasma change from a solid state to a molten state. The apparatus for filtering the plasma permits only a high intensity region of the plasma to pass through to the substrate.

A method of ceramic coating a substrate by thermodeposition from a sol made by hydrolyzing and peptizing organometallic compounds in water. The sol contains colloidal particles having a size between about 0.0005 micron and about 10 microns and the deposited coatings have good packing characteristics as well as smoothness. Composite coatings are also deposited which contain reinforcing materials such as SiC embedded in the coated matrix. These coatings afford the substrate onto which they are coated excellent wear, anti-corrosion and insulating characteristics.

Flame produced vapors for combustion chemical vapor deposition are redirected from the direction of the flame by differential atmospheric pressure, such as positive pressure provided by a blower or negative pressure provided by a vacuum. This allows, for example, lower surface temperatures of substrates being coated with flame-produced vapors and coating of interior surfaces.
