Abstract: Various embodiments relate to p-phenylene ethynylene compounds as bioactive and detection agents. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of inducing germination of microbial spores including contacting the microbial spores with a p-phenylene ethynylene compound. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method for detecting an enzyme, a method of protein analysis, or a method of detecting a chemical agent, including introducing a p-phenylene ethylylene compound to a composition including an enzyme substrate, and analyzing the fluorescence of the p-phenylene ethynylene compound. Various embodiments provide sensors that include a p-phenylene ethynylene compound and an enzyme substrate.

Abstract: The invention relates to compositions including a charged oligo-phenylene ethynylene singlet-oxygen sensitizer and an oppositely-charged surfactant, which show an enhanced biocidal activity relative to a comparable concentration of the oligo-phenylene ethynylene without the oppositely-charged surfactant. The enhancement of biocidal activity is observed with an anionic oligo-phenylene ethynylene in the presence of a cationic surfactant such as TTAB, and with a cationic oligo-phenylene ethynylene in the presence of an anionic surfactant such as SDS.

Abstract: Various embodiments disclosed relate to conjugated polyelectrolytes and methods of using the same. Various embodiments provide a conjugated polyelectrolyte including a subunit having the structure —R1—Y—R2—Z—. At each occurrence, R1 is independently chosen from 1,4-bonded phenylene substituted by —X—R3—R4 j times and 2,5-bonded thiophene substituted by —X—R3—R4 j times. At each occurrence, Y is independently chosen from a bond and —C≡C—. At each occurrence, R2 is independently chosen from a bond, a substituted or unsubstituted phenylene, thiophenylene, azulenylene, heptalenylene, biphenylene, indacenylene, fluorenylene, phenanthrenylene, triphenylenylene, pyrenylene, naphthacenylene, chrysenylene, biphenylenylene, anthracenylene, and naphthylene. At each occurrence, Z is independently chosen from a bond and —C≡C—. The variables j, R3, and R4 are as defined herein.
