Abstract: Provided herein is a tissue scaffold that may include microstructure patterns on one or more surfaces that can modify the physical properties of the tissue scaffold. The microstructure patterns may be cell-directing across a larger spatial range than the prior art which uses chemically modified substrates. The present disclosure further includes tissue scaffold configured such that cells may infiltrate the tissue scaffold by responding to patterns of surface energy gradients on the tissue scaffold and the cells may not be constrained into patterns by physical means. As the cells proliferate, they associate and orient in response to long-range patterns to form confluent monolayers of cells while constructing functional macro-structure across the tissue scaffold surface.

Abstract: A manufacturing method fora pipeline flow diverter or stent includes activating a blood-contacting metal surface of the medical device via i) propene plasma treatment or ii) contacting the surface with an organic solution comprising a silane functional compound having an ethylenically unsaturated functional group, wherein the organic solution follows a blood flow path through the medical device; grafting a polymeric hydrogel to the activated surface; bonding a positively charged spacer molecule to the polymeric hydrogel by contacting the polymeric hydrogel with a first wet chemistry treatment composition comprising an aqueous solution containing a cationic polymer, wherein the first wet chemistry treatment follows a blood flow path through the medical device; and covalently bonding heparin to the spacer molecule by contacting the spacer molecule with a second wet chemistry treatment composition comprising heparin, wherein the second wet chemistry treatment follows a blood flow path through the medical device.

Abstract: Coated medical devices include coated catheters. For example, a coated catheter can include a catheter tube of a tubular substrate and a coating thereover. The tubular substrate can be of a first polymeric material transparent to electromagnetic radiation in a range of visible light. The coating can be of a second polymeric material anchored to the tubular substrate by chain ends of the second polymeric material impregnated in the first polymeric material by way of a spent visible-light photoinitiator. Methods of coating can include methods of coating medical devices such as the coated catheter. For example, a method of coating can include irradiating a tubular substrate impregnated with a visible-light photoinitiator with the foregoing electromagnetic radiation while the tubular substrate is disposed in an aqueous solution of a monomer, thereby initiating a radical polymerization of the monomer and coating the tubular substrate with the coating of the second polymer material.
