The display apparatus includes: a display panel; a backlight unit configured to provide light to the display panel; a signal processor configured to obtain a PWM signal corresponding to a grayscale of an input image; and a driver including a switching element, the driver being configured to control a current applied to the backlight unit by alternately turning the switching element on/off during a section in which the PWM signal provided from the signal processor is in an on-state, and the driver is configured to, based on the grayscale of the input image being greater than or equal to a threshold value, alternately turn the switching element on/off based on a first period, and, based on the grayscale of the input image being less than the threshold value, to alternately turn the switching element on-off based on a second period shorter than the first period.

A display device and a method for driving a backlight thereof are provided. The display device includes a signal generator configured to generate a first PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal and a second PWM signal, a low current driver configured to generate first output current using the first PWM signal, a high current driver configured to generate second output current using the second PWM signal, and a backlight configured to be driven by at least one of the first output current generated by the low current driver and the second output current generated by the high current driver. Accordingly, the display device can control the brightness of the backlight with an extended resolution which is higher than the resolution that can be output from the existing backlight.

The electricity generator includes a heat transfer unit which contacts the backlight unit, at least one heat storage unit which contacts the heat transfer unit, and at least one thermoelectric device comprising a heat generator and a heat absorber contacting the heat transfer unit. The light emitting diode (LED) driver circuit includes an LED array; an LED driving circuit configured to provide a constant current to the LED array by a switching operation of a switch element; and a driving controller configured to control the switch element using a clock signal of a preset frequency so that the constant current corresponding to a dimming signal is provided to the LED array. The driving controller varies a frequency of the clock signal in response to a signal value indicating that the dimming signal is being transitioned.
