A video signal is encoded by adaptively weighting reference pictures of a current frame based on temporal positions of the reference pictures relative to the current frame in MCTF prediction and update procedures, and such encoded video signal is decoded accordingly. Efficient weighting of reference pictures based on their temporal positions in the prediction and update procedures improves the compression efficiency of the video signal.
