    摘要: A pollution control device has a metal housing, a solid pollution control device disposed within the metal housing, and a mounting mat disposed between the pollution control element and the housing for positioning the pollution control element and for absorbing mechanical and thermal shock. The mounting mat includes a layer of intumescent material having at least one insert formed of a resilient, flexible, fibrous non-intumescent material. The insert is positioned along at least a portion of at least one lateral edge of the mounting mat to prevent erosion of the intumescent material and to provide a seal between the pollution control element and the housing.

    摘要: An insulating liner for use with exhaust system or pollution control devices such as catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters or traps. The insulating liner is shown in relation to an end cone for use with a catalytic converter. The end cone includes an outer metallic end cone and a free-standing insulating cone positioned within the outer metallic end cone. A substantial portion of the inner surface of the insulating liner is exposed to hot exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine. The insulating liner is preferably formed of a composite containing inorganic fibers and/or particles, which makes the insulating liner rigid, yet capable of withstanding repeated mechanical and thermal shocks.

Embodiments of the non-woven mat surprisingly have a Resiliency Value after three thermal cycles from 25° C. to 700° C./400° C. of the Real Condition Fixture Test at least 1.1 times greater than the Resiliency Value of a comparable non-woven mat consisting of any individual type of fibers of the non-woven mat. The non-woven mats are useful, for example, in pollution control devices and other thermal insulation applications.

    摘要: Intumescent vermiculite flakes useful in mountings of catalytic converters are prepared by partially dehydrating vermiculite ore to afford a uniform content of chemically bound water from about 1.0 to 3.2% by weight and a uniform bulk density from about 0.2 to 0.9 g/cm.sup.3. Such a mounting affords good support to the monolith at warm-up temperatures, exerts adequate holding forces at operating temperatures without danger of cracking the monolith, and does not incur gradual reduction in holding forces at operating temperatures. The mounting layer can be applied as either a mat or a paste.

    摘要: The present invention provides a mounting mat (30) for mounting a pollution control monolith (20) in a pollution control device (10). The mounting mat has a bulk density of 0.12 to 0.3 g/cm3 and comprises (i) a layer of chopped magnesium aluminium silicate glass fibers and (ii) a layer of ceramic fibers obtainable from a sol-gel process. Preferably, the layer of chopped magnesium aluminium silicate glass fibers and the layer of ceramic fibers define opposite major surfaces of the mat. The present invention further provides a pollution control device (10), comprising a pollution control monolith (20) arranged in a metallic casing (11) with the mounting mat (30) disposed between the metallic casing (11) and pollution control monolith (20).
