Abstract: Multi-layer substrates comprising a top surface layer of pulp fibers, a bottom surface layer of pulp fibers, and a melted thermoplastic material layer between the pulp fiber layers, where the thermoplastic material comprises polyethylene or has a tan delta value of 0.2 to 0.4 within the temperature range of 100° F. to 350° F. The multi-layer substrate can include a cleaning composition loaded onto the multi-layer substrate, where a fluid pathway through the melted thermoplastic material allows the cleaning composition to travel from the top surface layer to the bottom surface layer. The multi-layer substrate may be void of chemical adhesives, where adhesion between the top surface layer and the thermoplastic layer, and between the bottom surface layer and the thermoplastic layer is instead provided by the thermoplastic material itself, which bonds to groups of fibers in the pulp fibers top and bottom surface layers that are in contact with the thermoplastic material as it melts.

Abstract: Methods for forming multi-layer substrates including top and bottom surface layers and a melt softened thermoplastic material layer between the exterior surface layers, where the thermoplastic material includes polyethylene or has a tan delta value of 0.2 to 0.4 within the temperature range of 100° F.-350° F. The 3 (or more) layers are assembled, and heated, melt softening the thermoplastic material, causing bonding of the thermoplastic layer to the exterior surface layers. A cleaning composition may be loaded onto the multi-layer substrate, where a fluid pathway through the melted thermoplastic material allows the cleaning composition to travel between the surface layers. Adhesion between the surface layers and the thermoplastic layer is provided by the thermoplastic material itself, which bonds to groups of fibers in the surface layers. The process does not require chemical adhesives, any processing water, drying, or the like, so as to be possible with low capital investment.

Abstract: A dry mixture of tomato powder, vinegar powder, and a modified food starch (e.g., hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate) capable of thickening upon addition of liquid, without requiring heating, is disclosed. The dry mixture may be employed as a dry rub, or may be mixed with a liquid of the consumer's choice (e.g., water, beer, wine, bourbon, soda, pineapple juice, other juice, vinegar, or the like). Upon such mixing, and without application of heat, the resulting mixture will spontaneously thicken to have viscosity and other rheological characteristics similar to bottled barbeque sauces, which are thickened with application of heat during formulation, e.g., before bottling.

Abstract: Packaged emulsified food compositions (e.g., salad dressings including an oil/water emulsion) including a probiotic, which may be included therein, without requiring heating during packaging, and without requiring refrigeration for long term shelf stability. The probiotic may be sporeforming. In an embodiment the probiotic comprises spores which do not germinate until ingested by a consumer (e.g., such that the spores germinate in the intestinal tract of the consumer). The probiotic may comprise Bacillus coagulans spores, which may be added to the emulsion following addition of an acid. The salad dressing or other food composition advantageously can be cold packed, requiring no heating during manufacture, and no refrigeration after packaging, all while providing stability of 1 year or more.

Abstract: Packaged aerated acidified food compositions (e.g., aerated dips, sauces, etc.) having a low density (e.g., 0.4 to 0.8 g/cm3) due to incorporation of gas bubbles (e.g., nitrogen or air) within an aerated matrix. In addition to the aerated matrix the composition further includes a relatively high fraction of oil (e.g., as an oil/water emulsion). The compositions are shelf-stable, so as to exhibit microbial stability and stability with respect to the aerated low density “whipped” texture, without requiring refrigeration. The composition includes the aerating gas (e.g., nitrogen or air), a protein (e.g., soy or dairy), a stabilizer (e.g., a hydrocolloid, a cyclodextrin, a monoglyceride, and/or a diglyceride), oil, water, an emulsifier, and a food grade acid. Flavors, spices, and other components may be included.

Abstract: Packaged food compositions including but not limited to emulsified salad dressings (e.g., an oil/water emulsion) that contain calcium carbonate and phosphoric acid. Under conditions present in the salad dressing, the calcium carbonate reacts with the phosphoric acid to form surface modified calcium carbonate particles that dissolve over the shelf-life of the salad dressing to slowly release CO2 into the emulsion, resulting in a whipped, bodied texture for the salad dressing within the bottle or other container.
