Abstract:
This invention relates to a method of lubricating an internal combustion engine comprising at least one of a crankcase, a gear and a wet-clutch, said method comprising supplying to said crankcase, gear, and wet-clutch a lubricating composition containing: (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (b) a friction modifying additive which is the reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic anhydride and an acid-functionalized amine compound.
Abstract:
A lubricant suitable for lubricating a two-stroke cycle engine which is fueled with a liquid fuel having a volatility less than that of gasoline comprises an oleaginous synthetic ester, a normally liquid solvent having a kinematic viscosity of less than about 5 or 2 mm2/s at 100° C. and a nitrogen-containing dispersant bearing a hydrocarbyl group of at least 26 carbon atoms and having a nitrogen content of at least 4 percent by weight. The nitrogen content of the lubricant is at least about 0.3 percent by weight.
Abstract:
A lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, 1 to 1000 parts per million by weight of titanium in the form of an oil-soluble titanium-containing material, and at least one additional lubricant additive provides beneficial effects on properties such as deposit control, oxidation, and filterability in engine oils.

Abstract:
The invention is directed to a method for reducing low speed pre-ignition events in a spark-ignited direct injection internal combustion engine by supplying to the sump a lubricant composition which contains an oil of lubricating viscosity and an oil soluble metal compound, wherein the metal of the oil soluble metal compound may be a group (IV) metal, which may be titanium or zirconium.

Abstract:
A high TBN overbased metal sulfonate detergent is prepared by reacting a hydrocarbyl-substituted organic sulfonic acid or metal salt thereof with a basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound in the presence of a mono-alcohol and a carboxylic acid and reacting this mixture with carbon dioxide to form a carbonated overbased metal sulfonate. The resulting overbased metal detergent has a metal equivalent to sulfonic acid substrate ratio of 5:1 to 27:1. The product thus prepared has improved viscometrics, filterability, and TBN:ash ratio. Lubricating compositions comprising said overbased detergent display reduced friction and wear performance. The invention further relates to methods of lubricating an internal combustion engine with a lubricant containing an overbased detergent prepared as described.
