    摘要: Methods and apparatuses are provided for the manufacture of coextruded polymeric multilayer optical films. The multilayer optical films have an ordered arrangement of layers of two or more materials having particular layer thicknesses and a prescribed layer thickness gradient throughout the multilayer optical stack. The methods and apparatuses described allow improved control over individual layer thicknesses, layer thickness gradients, indices of refraction, interlayer adhesion, and surface characteristics of the optical films. The methods and apparatuses described are useful for making interference polarizers, mirrors, and colored films that are optically effective over diverse portions of the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectra.

Exemplary roll of film includes an oriented optical film characterized by an effective orientation axis. The oriented optical film comprises only one birefringent polymeric material, at least one birefringent material and at least one isotropic material, or a first birefringent material and a second birefringent material, the birefringent materials characterized by effective orientation axes along the MD. The optical film has a width of greater than 0.3 m and a length a length greater than 10 m.

    摘要: A projection engine uses a first polarizing beam splitter (PBS) that substantially reflects light incident along a first input direction in a first polarization state and substantially transmits light incident in the first input direction in a second polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state. The first PBS demonstrates an angularly dependent reflectivity for light in the second polarization state that is asymmetric about the first input direction. At least two imager devices are positioned to receive light reflected and transmitted by the first PBS respectively. The imager devices modulate the incident light with an image. The image light from the imagers is combined and projected.

    摘要: The present invention provides a unique polarizing beam splitter (PBS) that is suitable for use in projection systems and displays. The PBS contains at least one prism having at least one major surface and having a refractive index of at least about 1.6 and a birefringent film disposed on the major surface of the prism. The birefringent film is a multi-layer film having at layers of at least a first material and a second material. After uniaxial stretching, the film exhibits a refractive index difference of less than about 0.15 units in the stretched direction.
