A power transmission of the type having interchangeable gear sets connected to hydraulically actuated friction clutches. The clutches are selectively engageable to establish various gear ratios for changing the speed and direction of the vehicle. A brake is provided for the transmission by engaging a pair of these hydraulically actuated clutches at the same time, the two clutches being connected to a common jack shaft through gears of different ratios. The jack shaft is geared directly to the wheels of the vehicle and by engaging both clutches at the same time, the gears have no synchronous ratio except zero r.p.m. Thus, one of the clutches has been engaged and the second clutch is then engaged to cause the braking action, the second clutch slipping until the vehicle stops.

A power transmission for an all-wheel drive earth moving truck of the off-highway type. More specifically, an inter-axle friction clutch biased differential with automatic clutch release for such a power transmission. The differential is equipped with a clutch which provides a predetermined amount of torque differential, or bias, between the two shafts that drive the front and rear wheels, for thereby accommodating slipping conditions. The amount of differential or bias torque is determined by the load capability of the drive train which is located downstream of the differential. The clutch serves to protect the drive train from excessive loads in that, when the predetermined torque value is attained, the friction clutch will slip. Thus means are provided for sensing the slip of the friction clutch and for completely releasing the clutch before high speed slip values of the clutch are developed. Otherwise continuous slip of the clutch at high speed slip values and rated torque would cause failure of the clutch.

A selector valve assembly for use with power shift transmissions to select various operating speed ranges, and of the type having a plurality of shiftable hydraulic spools. The assembly includes a mechanical latch plate for holding the selected spools in an extended, operative position. A neutral piston is provided for engagement with the latch plate to urge the latter to the piston releasing position to thereby disengage the spools.
