A torque converter having an engine-driven pump impeller fastened to an input shell and a fluid-driven turbine runner mounted on an output shaft is equipped with a fluid-operated lockup clutch for providing a direct mechanical drive between the input shell and the output shell. The lockup clutch is maintained in a slipping engagement condition in an intermediate speed range. This slipping engagement is controlled by a variable fluid passage whose opening size is determined by an axial position of the turbine runner relative to the output shaft. The turbine runner is rotatable and axially movable relative to the output shaft. The turbine runner and the output shaft have, respectively, flanges which rotates side by side. There are formed, between the flanges, a plurality of pockets which are circumferentially arranged. Each pocket has contoured surfaces, and confines a ball. Each set of the ball and pocket is so formed as to control the opening size of the variable fluid passage by causing the turbine runner to move axially when the turbine runner rotate relative to the output shaft.

A slip control mechanism comprises a throttling path with a cross-sectional area variable according to the relative displacement of an output element of a torque converter and an output shaft. The throttling path is in communication via a fluid passage with a disengagement chamber opposing one side of a friction clutch. The other side of the friction clutch faces an engagement chamber. The disengagement chamber and the engagement chambers are so arranged as to control slippage of the friction clutch by pressure balance therebetween. The throttling path is formed in a specific geometry which assures moderate changes in the pressure balance between the disengagement chamber and engagement chamber in an intermediate throttling range. In the preferred construction, the throttling path is so constructed that the rate of change of the throttling cross-sectional area satisifes the inequalityd.sup.2 S/dx.sup.2 .gtoreq.whereS is the cross-sectional area of the throttling path, andx is the relative displacement of the output element of the torque converter and the output shaft.

A lock-up control apparatus for a vehicle automatic transmission enables an engine stalling prevention at the time of a sudden deceleration in the lock-up state of a torque converter without causing the slip of the torque converter before the sudden deceleration, and prevents effectiveness of the fuel consumption from being sacrificed by a fuel cut. A controller performs the change-speed control on an automatic transmission through shift solenoids and on the basis of a throttle opening and a transmission output speed, and also performs the lock-up control of the torque converter through a lock-up solenoid. During the coasting drive when the throttle opening is set close to zero, the controller sets the torque converter to have a minimum lock-up capacity through the lock-up solenoid within such a range that no slip occurs. When the sudden deceleration is carried out, the controller releases the lock-up, though this lock-up release is rapidly achieved with the minimum lock-up capacity thereby to avoid the engine stalling.

A video caption detection scheme capable of detecting captions from the coded video data which are coded by using a combination of predictive coding and motion compensation, without requiring the decoding of coded video data into frame images. In this video caption detection scheme, whether each pixel/block in the video data is coded by using inter-frame correlation without using motion compensation or not is judged. Then, a region in the video data at which pixels/blocks that is judged as being coded by using inter-frame correlation without using motion compensation are concentrated time-wise and space-wise, is detected as a caption region. The detection can be realized by counting a frequency of appearance of a pixel/block which is judged as being coded by using inter-frame correlation without using motion compensation, at each pixel/block position of a frame over a prescribed counting period, and then comparing the counted frequency of appearance with a prescribed threshold value.

In a system in which the coded video data are decoded and displayed on a video display device, events including scene changes are detected from the coded video data, and icons are produced from the coded video data in correspondence to the detected events. On the other hand, playback possible positions from which the coded video data can be playbacked smoothly are determined, and an index information including an information on the produced icons and the determined playback possible positions is managed. Then, a plurality of icons are displayed on a single display, and a user is allowed to specify a desired icon among the displayed icons on the single display. Then, one playback possible position corresponding to the desired icon specified by the user is obtained according to the managed index information, and the coded video data are supplied to the video display device starting from the obtained playback possible position.

A torque distribution control device includes two rotational speed differential responsive type control couplings each having various transfer torque characteristics which differ in the ratio of a transfer torque to a rotational speed differential. The control device selects one of the torque transfer characteristics in response to a signal supplied thereto. When turning the outer wheel side control coupling is supplied with a signal for selecting the transfer torque characteristic that produces a maximum transfer torque for a given rotational speed differential, and the inner wheel side control coupling is supplied with a signal for attaining a non-slip rotational speed differential and for selecting the transfer torque characteristic that produces a transfer torque equal to that produced by the outer wheel side control coupling when the non-slip rotational speed differential is obtained. When the vehicle is running straight ahead, both control couplings are supplied with signals for selecting the transfer torque characteristics that produce maximum transfer torque for a given rotational speed differential.
