The present invention provides an optimum radial tire which is suitable for each car. In the present invention, an .alpha. value is introduced as indicating the properties of the car and the tread rubber of the tire is selected according to the .alpha. value. Accordingly, the present invention provides a radial tire which comprises a tread and sidewall, wherein the tread has the claimed relation between a viscoelasticity (tan .delta.) peak temperature (Tp) and an .alpha. value which indicates the properties of a car, and a one side half width (w/2) of 25.degree. Base tread comprises not less than 30 parts of a carbon black having an iodine adsorption number of 30 to 90 mg/g and not less than 10 parts of a short fiber oriented in the axial direction. Side wall comprises not more than 30 parts of the carbon black and not less than 10 parts by weight of the short fiber oriented in the peripheral direction. Bead apex comprises not less than 65 parts by weight of a carbon black which has an iodine adsorption number of 60 to 100 mg/g and not less than 20 parts by weight of the short fiber oriented in the axial direction or a direction which crosses the axial direction. This radial tire is light and has a low energy loss, and can provide an excellent steering stability.

The present invention provides radial tires which exhibit physical properties in the diagonal area of FIG. 1 and which are suitable for passenger cars equipped with an anti-lock brake system. The radial tires of the present invention have an aspect ratio of 70% or less and comprises a tread, a pair of side walls, a pair of bead portions, each having a bead apex disposed therein, the bead apex having a JIS hardness or 85 or more, and a first and a second breaker, wherein the tread has a tan .delta. peak temperature (Tp) of -40.degree. to -5.degree. C., a one side half width (W/2) of 25.degree. C. or less and a JIS-A hardness of 56 to 72; the tan .delta. peak temperature (Tp) and the one side half width being obtained from a viscoelasticity (tan .delta.) temperature distribution curve which is determined using a viscoelastic spectrometer a frequency of 10 Hz, and initial strain of 10%, an amplitude of .+-.0.25% and a temperature elevating rate of 2.degree. A rubber composition comprises 5 to 150 parts by weight of an inorganic filler, 0 to 30 parts by weight of a silane coupling agent and 5 to 100 parts by weight of a vegetable oil having an iodine number of at most 130, based on 100 parts by weight of a diene rubber. A natural rubber is preferably used as the diene rubber. The rubber composition can reduce rolling resistance with decreasing the amount of petroleum oils to be used.

The aluminum hydroxide has a loosed bulk density of not more than 0.60 g/cm3, a DOP oil absorption of at least 70 cm3/100 g and less than 250 cm3/100 g, and a BET specific surface area of at least 30 m2/g and less than 350 m2/g. 5-150 parts by weight of the aluminum hydroxide is blended with 100 parts by weight of a rubber component to obtain the tire tread rubber composition. The rubber component preferably includes at least 60 parts by weight of styrene-butadiene rubber having a styrene content of 20-60% by weight.

A pneumatic tire comprises a radially innermost belt ply having an axial width of from 0.8 to 1.2 times the tread width, a carcass with turnup portions having a radially outer end at a height of not more than 0.15 times the tire section height H, and a short fiber reinforcing layer having a thickness of from 0.3 to 1.0 mm disposed along the axially outer surface of the carcass in each of a pair of sidewall portions between the axial outer edge of the radially innermost belt ply and the radially outer end of the carcass turnup portion. The short fiber reinforcing layer is a compound of: 100 parts by weight of a base rubber compound containing 40 to 70 parts by weight of butadiene rubber and 60 to 30 parts by weight of natural rubber and/or isoprene rubber; 10 to 30 parts by weight of short fiber; and not more than 30 parts by weight of carbon black whose iodine number is in the range of from 30 to 90 mg/g. The short fiber in the short fiber reinforcing layer is oriented so that the oriented direction of at least 90% of the short fiber is in the range of from +20 to -20 degrees to the circumferential direction of the tire. The short fiber reinforcing layer has a directional complex elastic modulus such that the complex elastic modulus E*a in the circumferential direction is not less than 5 times the complex elastic modulus E*b in the radial direction.
