摘要: The development of sludge in phosphating baths is prevented by continuously diverting a partial volume of the baths into a separate device comprising three open chambers: an oxidation chamber where the solution is treated with an O.sub.2 -containing gas to oxidize the iron (II) of the solution of iron (III), which precipitates as phosphate; a conditioning chamber in which the iron (iii) phosphate precipitate formed in the oxidation chamber is agglomerated into a readily sedimented form; and a sedimentation chamber in which the sediment formed in the conditioning chamber is separated from the remaining liquid phosphating solution. This solution is then replenished with phosphate layer-forming components, and the replenished solution is subsequently recycled to the phosphating bath.

摘要: The invention relates to a process for treating metal surfaces, preferably of aluminum, aluminum alloys and steel, for the subsequent application of organic coating compositions. The metal surfaces are wetted with an aqueous bath solution containing chromium(III)ions, fluoride ions and an organic film former which is soluble or homogeneously dispersible in water, after which the solution applied is dried and converted by heating into a water-insoluble film. The bath solution preferably contains the following constituents and approximate quantities thereof: 0.5 to 10 g/l of chromium(III)ions, 0.55 to 11 g/l of fluoride ions, 0.6 to 12.5 g/l of phosphate ions, and 0.15 to 5.0 g/l of organic film former. The organic film former preferably used is a polymer containing free carboxyl groups, more preferably a homopolymer and/or copolymer of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid.

摘要: The adhesion of, and corrosion protection provided by, organic surface coatings to underlying metal can be significantly improved if the degreased, etched, and pickled metal surfaces to be coated are first treated with an aqueous solution and/or dispersion of aluminum-zirconium complexes, which are obtainable as the reaction-product of a chelated aluminum component, an organo-functional ligand component, and a zirconium oxyhalide component, with the organo-functional ligand being chemically bonded to the chelated aluminum unit and the zirconium unit in the complex, and are subsequently treated with dilute aqueous solutions, emulsions, and/or dispersions of one or more inorganic and/or organic film-forming materials prior to coating the surfaces with conventional organic surface coatings.
