A method of forming reproduced in images on the surface of cured coating, the method including the steps of treating a surface of a cured coating with an organic solvent which does not dissolve the cured coating, but slightly dissolves a reproduced image layer and has a solubility parameter of about 7.5 to about 8.2, superposing, over the cured coating, a copying sheet which comprises a copy support having a reproduced image layer formed thereon to bring the reproduced image layer of the copying sheet into contact with the organic solvent-treated surface of cured coating, heat-transferring the reproduced image to the treated surface of cured coating, releasing the copy support to provide a transfer product on the cured coating, and forming a clear coating on the surface of the transfer product.

The present invention provides a method for forming a topcoat which comprises applying an aqueous colored base coating composition comprising a hydroxyl- and carboxyl-containing acrylic resin, a melamine resin, an alicyclic epoxy-containing compound, a neutralizing agent, and a coloring pigment to a substrate and applying to the base coat an organic solvent type clear coating composition to be cured by the crosslinking reaction between a carboxyl group and an epoxy group.

The coating method of the present invention comprises sequentially applying an amine-neutralized type aqueous intermediate coating composition and an amine-neutralized type aqueous top coating composition, the method being characterized in that a coating composition mainly comprising (A) an amine-neutralized base resin having a hydroxyl value of 30 to 150 KOH mg/g and an acid value of 15 to 50 KOH mg/g, (B) an amino resin and (C) an organic sulfonic acid amine salt is used as the amine-neutralized type aqueous intermediate coating composition. The method of the present invention can improve the adhesion between layers of a multi-layer coating film formed from aqueous coating compositions and chipping resistance of said coating film.

A process for forming an overcoat by the two-coat one-bake method wherein a base coat composition and a clear coat composition are applied to a substrate ##STR1## wet-on-wet and thereafter cured at the same time by heating, the process being characterized in that the base coat composition is an aqueous coating composition consisting primarily of: (I) an aqueous dispersion or solution of a polymer containing a crosslinkable functional group, (II) a crosslinking agent, (III) a coloring pigment, and (IV) water, the clear coat composition being a coating composition comprising: (A) at least one resin selected from the group consisting of (i) a resin having at least one epoxy group and at least one hydroxyl group in the molecule, (ii) a resin mixture of (ii-1) a resin having at least two epoxy groups in the molecule and (ii-2) a resin having at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule, (iii) a resin having at least two epoxy groups in the molecule, and (iv) any mixture thereof, (B) a crosslinking agent comprising a compound having at least two noncyclic acid anhydride groups and represented by formula (1) wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 50 carbon atoms, R' is a bivalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 50 carbon atoms, the hydrocarbon groups R and R' containing or not containing an ether linkage, urethane linkage or ester linkage, and n is an integer of 1 to 500, and (C) a curing catalyst.

The present invention provides an aqueous curable resin composition which comprises: [A] a resin component containing, as functional groups, a specific aprotic onium salt-containing group, a hydroxyl group, an epoxy group, and a hydrolyzable group directly bound to a silicon atom or a hydroxysilyl group, and [B] a metal chelate compound selected from aluminum chelate compound, zirconium chelate compound and titanium chelate compound. The composition of the present invention is an aqueous composition which has an excellent storage stability and good curability and is capable of giving a cured product having a high water resistance.

A method for coating an article made of polypropylene with an electrically conductive primer and thereafter electrostatically applying an organic solvent-type overcoat composition to the primer. The electrically conductive primer contains (A) a urethane-modified chlorinated polypropylene which is a mixture or addition reaction product of a chlorinated polypropylene and a polyurethane resin, the chlorinated polypropylene being prepared by chlorinating a homopolymer of propylene or a copolymer of propylene and another olefin monomer, (B) a melamine resin, (C) a polyester resin and (D) an electrically conductive substance such as carbon black, graphite, silver, nickel or copper. The electrically conductive primer has a surface resistivity of up to 1.times.10.sup.8 ohms after the application of the overcoat composition.

The invention provides a crosslinking agent comprising a compound having at least two noncyclic acid anhydride groups and represented by the following formula ##STR1## wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 50 carbon atoms, R' is a bivalent hydrocarbon group having 2 to 50 carbon atoms, the hydrocarbon groups R and R' containing or not containing an ether linkage, urethane linkage or ester linkage, and n is an integer of 1 to 500.The invention also provides a curable composition including (A) at least one resin selected from the group consisting of (i) a resin having at least one epoxy group and at least one hydroxyl group in the molecule, (ii) a resin mixture of a resin having at least two epoxy groups in the molecule and a resin having at least two hydroxyl groups in the molecule, and (iii) a resin having at least two epoxy groups in the molecule, and (B) the above-mentioned crosslinking agent.
