摘要： Circulating free lambda and kappa free light chains in blood play a role in the pathogenesis of acute renal failure due to myeloma. Coupled plasma filtration and adsorption allows separation of plasma from blood and treatment of the plasma through a cartridge containing a sorbent or resin material, such as hydrophobic divinylbenzene styrenic resins having an average bead diameter of 75 microns, an average pore diameter of 30 nm, and a surface area of 700 m2/g. Lambda and kappa free light chain concentrations progressively decrease during coupled plasma filtration and adsorption treatment resulting in significant reductions by the end of the treatment.

摘要： A blood treatment system comprising at least one first device and at least one second device, wherein the first device is a membrane filter for the removal of toxic mediators from blood and the second device is suitable for the removal of granulocytes and monocytes from blood. The first device has a first blood flow path a first blood flow path for conducting blood through and the second device has a second blood flow path. The first and second devices are serially connected in succession in such a way that the first blood flow path is in fluid communication with the second blood flow path.The membrane has an interior filter space in its housing and a semipermeable membrane arranged in the interior filter space, which membrane divides the interior filter space into a retentate chamber and permeate chamber. The housing has a blood inlet device and a blood outlet device that are in fluid communication with the retentate chamber, as well as a permeate outlet for diverting permeate from the permeate chamber. The blood inlet device, the retentate chamber and the blood outlet device form the first blood flow path. The membrane filter has a separation characteristic such that the sieve coefficient for albumin, SKAlb, is within the range from 0.015 to 0.35.

摘要： A plasmapheresis device includes a column or other flow mechanism in which plasma flows following separation of the plasma from cellular components like blood cells, platelets and the like. The column includes a moiety, such as an antibody, which selectively binds to galectin-3. By removing galectin-3 from the blood stream of a mammal by at least 10%, improvements in the treatment of inflammation, suppression of the formation of fibroses, and a variety of cancer treatments can be effected or improved. The device provides for multiple columns to remove a variety of elements but includes one which selectively removes galectin-3 from the blood flow. Other agents may be added to the plasma before recombination with the cellular components of the blood, and before returning the recombined flow to the patient.

A forward end of the needle extends beyond the skin engaging surface a selected distance to limit a depth that the needle penetrates into the animal's skin.
