A lumber sorter includes a plurality of bins. A conveyor carries lumber (e.g. boards) along a path extending above the plurality of bins. A diverter is selectively operable to allow the conveyor to carry the boards past one or more bins or to divert a selected board into a selected bin. The diverter may comprise an upstream gate and a downstream gate, each operable to move between respective closed positions and open positions. In the closed positions, the top surfaces of the upstream and downstream gates are substantially level and allow boards to travel along the path as directed by the conveyor. The diverter may be actuated to the open position in which the upstream and downstream gates are separated, thereby providing a path for a board to fall into a bin.

The invention relates to a method for measuring the volume or the end face diameter of a tree trunk and for quality control. The volume is measured in a prior known manner with laser gauges capable of measuring top and butt diameters as well as a length, which are used for calculating a volume. For quality control, the end face of a tree trunk is illuminated with red light and blue light, and light coming from the end face of the tree trunk is received by a color matrix camera (5). From the red/blue ratio in the camera's (5) signals is identified the proportion of rot or other defect in the end face of a tree trunk. The camera signals can be used for calculating the end face diameters of tree trunks. The method is integrated with a pulpwood pretreatment process upstream of debarking.

This invention concerns a system for sorting elongated random width wood boards and preparing board rows having a row width within a predetermined width range. The system comprises a main longitudinal surface, a conveyor for conveying the boards on the main surface, a width detector, and accumulating compartments located one after the other under the main surface, controllable traps located on the main surface providing access to the accumulating compartments, controllable gates for retaining or releasing the boards accumulated therein and a controller. The controller selectively distributes each of the boards into the accumulating compartments, and controls the gates of the accumulating compartments to release the boards accumulated therein when the sum of the widths of the boards accumulated is within the predetermined width range.

The invention relates to a method for increasing strength and/or reducing strength variations in multi-layer wood, plywood, and the like sandwich material. The method comprises measuring wood veneers (10) for dry substance density (ρ) with high-frequency electromagnetic resonance (TEM) and additionally analyzing the homogeneity and/or grain structure of wood veneers from a wood veneer surface in the way of its darkness (R). If the wood veneer comprises a number of local first regions, which are darker than a predominant darkness of the veneer surface, the wood veneer in question has its calculated dry substance density (ρC) established to be lower than its initially measured value (ρM). On the other hand, if the wood veneer has a substantially uniform darkness, the wood veneer in question has the longitudinal and lateral distribution of its dry substance density evaluated and, if those are substantially uniform, the calculated dry substance density (ρC) of the wood veneer in question is established for a sorting process to be higher than its initially measured value (ρM). Wood veneers are sorted on the basis of said calculated dry densities for at least two different density categories. In a first density category (A), the dry substance density is higher than in a second density category (B). Wood veneers are laid on top of each other for multi-layer wood, plywood, or some other sandwich material (20), the veneers included in the first density category serving as surface veneers (13) and the veneers included in the second density category serving as middle veneers (14).
