An aluminum heat exchanger includes laminated aluminum tubes and corrugated fins, a core portion receiving respective ends of tubes into sheet metals members, and iron or stainless steel inserts having high strength receiving U-shaped folded pieces of the sheet metal members contacting the corrugated fins at the outermost portion of the core portion. The tubes and the corrugated fins are held and pressed from both sides of the core portion by the inserts and the corrugated fins are protected from coming apart during a brazing operation.

The present invention refers to a plate heat exchanger (1) for heat transfer between two fluids, comprising at least a permanently joined module (2) with several, principally rectangular heat transfer plates (3) equally distributed on each side of an imaginary centre plane (M) of the module, which is parallel to the plane of the heat transfer plates (3), the heat transfer plates (3) having inlet and outlet openings (13, 14) for respective fluids in their corner portions (15) and a heat transfer portion (16) located between respective inlet and outlet openings, in which an intermediate heat transfer plate (3B) has a weld (17A) against a first adjacent heat transfer plate (3A), extending at least round said heat transfer portion and round the inlet and outlet openings for one of the fluids and a weld (17B) against a second adjacent heat transfer plate (3C), extending at least round said heat transfer portion and round the inlet and outlet openings for the second fluid. At least one of said welds (17A, 17B) in at least an adjacent pair of heat transfer plates on each side of said centre plane is done in direction towards said centre plane.

A process for manufacturing hard-soldered aluminum heat exchangers is provided. For heat exchangers which are provided with flat tubes of a narrow interior with, known soldering processing operating with a fluxing agent cannot be used or can only be used with extreme difficulty. For such flat tubes, and optionally for turbulence inserts which can be slid into such flat tubes, certain materials and coatings are provided which result in a soldered connection in the tube interior where, according to the new process, no fluxing agent is used.

The present invention is a brazing composition for brazing a tube made of aluminum or aluminum alloy and a fin made of aluminum or aluminum alloy when manufacturing a heat exchanger such as evaporators, condensers, radiators, etc., comprising a powder of Al-Si-Zn alloy and binder, wherein the content of Zn in the powder of Al-Si-Zn alloy is in a range of 10 to 55 wt %.

A heat exchanger for an automobile air conditioning system and a method for manufacture of the same. The heat exchanger a plurality of refrigerant flowing tubes, a plurality of corrugated fins sandwiched between the tubes and a pair of header pipes liquid-tightly brazed and jointed to the opposite ends of the tubes respectively. Each of the header pipes is a hollow solid body produced by an extrusion of an aluminum material and having a flat section and a rounded section. The flat section includes a plurality of apertures for receiving the tubes and is thicker than the rounded section. Top and bottom support beams are not only brazed to the outermost corrugated fins but also jointed at their opposite ends to the flat sections of the header pipes. A plurality of brazing beads braze and liquid-tightly joint the opposite ends of the tubes to the first and second header pipes. The brazing beads are formed by melting in a brazing furnace a pair of brazing metal plates respectively interposed between the opposite ends of the tubes and the header pipes. This heat exchanger is prevented from burst, deformation and refrigerant leakage.

A vestibule for part entry or exit from a flow through type of braze furnace in which no substantial physical barrier is necessary to prevent air exchange between the vestibule and the outside. A controller burner within the vestibule continually burns oxygen that does leak in, sensing whether combustion is complete trough the use of an analyzer in an exhaust stack. In addition, a neutral gas injector within the vestibule chamber maintains a near net zero pressure balance in order to minimize, though not prevent, ingress leakage. Parts can therefore enter the door freely without dragging through the impediment of a physical barrier.

It is common practice to assemble heat exchangers from a multitude of pre-formed and sometimes extremely delicate pieces. The pieces have to be held in jigs along with appropriately placed braze material and then heated to achieve brazing. The invention takes advantage of the ability which some materials have, to considerably extend their areas without rupturing, by using such materials in that they are assembled in the flat condition and then diffusion bonded, followed by inflation of the parts of the assembly which are to provide the fluid passageways, inlet manifolds and headers. The construction of heat exchangers is thus considerably simplified.

A method and apparatus especially useful for supplying inert gas to a highly pressurized pressure vessel, such as a hybrid inflator for an automotive airbag module, and weld sealing the gas passage or opening therein to avoid or substantially eliminate weld cracks. The apparatus for accomplishing same comprises no moving parts and the welding is accomplished by utilizing a groove feature formed into the surface of the pressure vessel wall surrounding the gas passage or opening so that no additional filler material is required to obtain the weld seal. The method and apparatus may also be used to weld seal low or non-pressurized vessels as well as vacuum vessels.

A method of making fluid-tight telescopic joints in serpentine aluminum tubing for heat exchangers with a plurality of relatively long U-shaped aluminum tubing sections for supporting aluminum fins stacked in spaced relation thereon and a plurality of short U-shaped aluminum tubing sections each having opposite ends adapted to telescopically fit in the ends of the long sections of tubing to connect adjacent ends of the long sections, including the steps of providing an aperture in at least one of the long tubing sections for venting the tubing during soldering, assembling the short tubing sections with the ends thereof telescopically positioned in the ends of the long tubing sections and spaced therefrom to permit the flow of solder into the telescopic joints, dipping the assembly in the fluid solder to immerse the short tubing sections and the lower ends of the upper tubing sections to a depth just below the upper ends of the lower tubing sections to flow solder into the telescopic joints while venting the tubing through the aperture in the long tubing section, introducing ultrasonic vibrations into the solder while the assembly is dipped, and closing the aperture in the long tubing section by brazing.
