In a method of bonding ferric and austenitic dual stainless steels, an insert material made of a Ni base alloy having a melting point below 1290.degree. C. is put between the bonding cross section faces of mother material steels comprising a dual phase stainless steel. A pressure force in the range of 3 MPa to 5 MPa is applied to a bonding area. The bonding area is heated at a temperature in the range of 1290.degree. C. to a melting point of the mother material steel. The temperature is kept for in the range of 30 second to 180 second.

The invention concerns a process for manufacturing ribbed tubes, wherein a stainless steel tube is provided with ribs by helicoidally winding a copper strip around it, and a ribbed tube thus manufactured. In joining the tube and rib, the unmelted copper strip is set on the tube surface edgewise into a melted area produced by a laser beam exclusively on the tube surface, thereby bonding the strip onto the tube by the solidification of the melted tube material. In this manner ribbed tubes can be provided, featuring an internal tube made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and a helicoidal rib made of copper for increasing the heat exchange surface of the tube, which is distinguished by high thermal conductivity.

Expandable intraluminal stents made of a powdered metal or polymer are provided as well their method of manufacture. These stents are characterized by a desired porosity, with a drug compressed into the pores of the stent. The stents are formed by subjecting one or more powdered materials in a die cavity to a pressure treatment followed by a heat treatment. The material may be cast directly in a stent-like form or cast into sheets or tubes from which the inventive stents are produced. The so-formed porous metal or polymer stent is then loaded with one or more drugs.

For an implantable medical devices, a system is provided for welding electrically conductive ribbon, typically stainless steel, to electrically conductive wire, typically platinum, the melting point of steel being substantially lower than that of platinum. An aperture is formed in the ribbon having an opening smaller than that of the wire. The ribbon is engaged with the wire such that the aperture is generally coextensive with the wire. Thereupon, a pulse laser beam is directed transversely of the ribbon through the aperture and onto the wire to simultaneously melt the wire and the ribbon and to create a homogeneous mix of the molten steel and platinum in the region surrounding the aperture. Thereafter, operation of the laser beam is discontinued to allow solidification and thereby achieve a welded connection between the ribbon and the wire.

A paper pulp defibering or refining plate in accordance with the invention comprises a comminuting surface having a large number of ridges separated by grooves. The plate body is made from a first material such as stainless steel or cast iron providing the overall mechanical strength of the plate in use. The upper part of the ridges is a layer of an abrasion resistant material based on grains of tungsten carbide bound in a metal alloy whose melting and brazing characteristics are appropriate to laser resurfacing on the plate body. The ridges are resurfaced successively by scanning a laser beam and a powder spray nozzle in one or more passes.

A laser welding process including: (a) using optical ray tracing to make a model of a laser beam and the geometry of a joint to be welded; (b) adjusting variables in the model to choose variables for use in making a laser weld; and (c) laser welding the joint to be welded using the chosen variables.

The shielding gas mixture for the TIG or GTAW arc welding of stainless steels, in particular of duplex or super duplex steels, comprises, in argon, from 3 to 18%, advantageously approximately 10%, of helium and from 1 to 3%, advantageously approximately 2%, of nitrogen. This gas mixture makes it possible to ensure good corrosion resistance of the metal deposited, acceptable solidity of the welds and excellent arc stability, as well as a suitable viscosity of the molten metal appropriate to manual welding in all positions.

A method of braze joining a copper member to a substrate of metal or ceramic material is disclosed according to which a diffusion barrier coating as defined is applied to the substrate alone, and a selected brazing alloy is interposed between copper member and substrate, followed by a two-step heating treatment. In the first step the assembly is heated at a temperature and for a time sufficient to melt the brazing alloy and cause a bond to form between the brazing alloy and the copper member and between the brazing alloy and the substrate. In the second step the temperature is raised and maintained in the range from about 600.degree. C. to about 950.degree. C. in a "solutionizing heat treatment" (as defined) for a time sufficient to allow the brazing alloy to form an "extended solid solution" (as defined) with copper in a controlled fashion to convert the bond to a strong joint which is resistant to thermal stress.

For the production of soft-cup cigarette packs, use is made of folding mandrels (13) which are designed as hollow bodies, on the outside of which pack blanks (12) are folded, and into which a cigarette group (11) is pushed. To produce a precise pack, the folding mandrel (13) preferably consists of two mandrel parts (19, 20) which are connected to one another by thin laser-weld seams (21, 22). The two mandrel parts are made of spring-steel sheets. The folding mandrel (13) so designed is releasably fastened to a folding turret in a special way via a connecting piece.
